w123 or w124 is the way to go. also make sure you can find a local parts car, generally you will need one to get the car up to par. Failinf your own abilities find a good MB mech.

Welcome,
If you had a 240D and it saved you in a wreck, then I would say you are not so new to MB diesels, you actually know their true and ultimate worth! that said, welcome to this group, you will get lots of help and many opinions. I don't know what your budget will allow for a car, so that might figure in your search, but you should know there are a lot of people here watching the market prices, and all agree that right now with the price of gas, the law of supply and demand is such that diesels are in HIGH demand now, and the prices for all the used ones is higher than normal right now. That said, the W123 diesels are great cars, straightforward to maintain and very long lived, but it's important that you get a rust free one. The W124 body, starting in 1986, was "softer" because the German government insisted it be that way to be more friendly to the cars it hit, but generally, the W124 was considered to be the best modern Mercedes in terms of trouble free operation while still being among the last of the Benzws built to a standard and not to a price point. The W126 diesels are good too, big strong long lasting and safe, but get one with the trap oxider issue sorted out, and with all books and records, and you should be fine. But aboid the 1991 and up "rod bender" 350 diesel models, and that goes also for the W140 diesels from the early '90's, the ones pre 1996 had lots of other frightfully expensive maintenance and repair issues, they are just too expensive. The nicest thing about a good MB diesel is that it is a safe sturdy car that with proper care, will probably go forever. A great decdision to make! These are nothing more than my own impressions, but Good luck in the hunt. Once you have in mind what you are looking for specifically you should ask here again, because many people have exactly the model you are looking for and are very conversant with that model, and the strengths and weaknesses of them.
