Tach problems:

It works 80% of the time. The rest of the time, it's either on zero, or jumping all over the place.

How can I fix this?

Thanks

do a search on the cigerette butt trick...it might work in your case....pull the tach amp, little brown trash can looking thing on the drivers side fender, then remove the cap and drop in a cig butt, garden hose washer, or foam packing peanut inthe can and push the guts back in the can...the effect is to push the contacts down a bit further into the socket....has worked for some folks, not for me. When you pull the tach amp, clean the pins good, and slightly crimp them so they make a better contact. Check/clean your ground points. Good luck

Throw some money at the problem. This is almost certainly the tach sending unit. Available from *************** for $65, including shipping. Had the same problem in the 83 300TDT and the sending unit solved it. Tach all the time!

Wait a minute. I'll be damned!!!

The former owner (cmichalik, a member here) already did the cig butt trick!! Maybe just a little tweaking will fix it.

Awesome!!

Interesting philosophy... Mine exhibitted the EXACT SAME symptoms. I recrimped the connectors at the fender. Problem solved 100%. Cost: FREE! Save your money. If the free fixes don't work then do the sender, but try the free things first! If you really like spending money then send some to ME.
