Turboing a 240D

I need some more info on the mercedes 240D. im fairly new to mercedes but i have extensive experience in VW diesels and high performance gassers. Im getting a 240D motor and i would like to squeeze some more juice out of it before i put it in the car im building. I know how to turbo the motor but i am not sure how durable these motors are. are there piston oilers on these motors? has anyone on here put a turbo on a 240?

thanx in advance

I saw a 240D LWB with a Rajay once.

The OM616 is dead nuts reliable/dependable/indestructible/etc when you leave it alone. Then again so is a 40hp VW.

I'm pretty sure the OM616 doesn't have piston squirters. OM617 turbo rods or main caps might get you the squirters.

The obvious question is why don't you use an OM617 turbo?

nope the 616 doesnt have the oil squirters and isnt worth turboing 40 hp.. just get an om617 that came factory turbo charged.. less work and its reliable

People have turbocharged om616's before. I don't think its worth doing though.

In many ways the 240 is just a 300 with one piston missing.
This means the annular oil ring pistons can be used in them...
Mercedes Turbo's 240 engines and sells them... and I think that Gurka has one in India... but they also do the necessary other internal mods to make them last.

well im getting the motor for free and i want a 4cyl so those are my reasons. im gonna be putting it either in my toyota pickup or seriesII land rover. i have built vw diesels which will kick most cars asses so i figured i could build up the mercedes motor to the point where it is bearable to drive. it doesnt need to be crazy fast just 140 lb/ft of torque. any more comments or info???

Yes, Sell that engine to someone with a 240d...RLeo is needing one right now..
and use that money on an Isuzu engine.. much faster AND much better fuel mileage available.... if you do that write me and I will get you in touch with a guy that put one into a Subaru Brat which had a Chevy frame put under it...and gets 35 mpg...

Talking Turbo a 240D

Hi everyone,
I am currently running a four speed turbo 240 D. I made an adapter plate that allows me to put the 5 cyl 300D turbo exhaust manifold on the little 4 banger. This works very well. No, the non turbo motor does not have piston squirters, but as long as you are not running crazy amounts of boost with huge amounts of extra fuel, it seems to work just fine. I regeared the car to a 3.07 rear end from an '82 300d, and removed the start/run fuel lockout bar from the injector pump. It will smoke if you floor it before the boost comes up. Once it reaches about 3-4 pounds of boost you can fuel around to your hearts content! The turbo adds enough power that the 3.07 gears are no problem, and I can run 65 up some pretty steep hills. The car is much more drivable than it ever was normally aspirated with the 3.692 gears. The engine is only turning 2736 RPM at 65 verses 3291 RPM with the low gears. If I drive it gently it gets about 37mpg verses the 32 mpg it achieved before mods.
Abnormal aspiration rocks! even on a 240D !

so it seems that turboing the mercedes would be about the same as an NA vw. now i just need to learn more about the mercedes pumps. i think ill treat it like an ECOdiesel and just run boost with very mild fueling. on VWs i run with no wastegate and control the boost with the amount of fuel. you can keep it below 20psi pretty easily. as long as i keep my EGTs low im not worried about burning the motor.
thanx for everything so far.
anyone have any more info?

Have you checked for interference with the deep sump front pan on these engines ?
If you know a lot about injection pumps and diesels already you might be surprised at the hp boost you can get just by sacrificing a little on the fuel mileage.... as long as it is all burning properly the extra fuel in the chamber is really what counts... and a proper egt guage will be a nice safety feature....
I think the squirters are just a rail arrangement along the inside of the block.. but they can't be interchanged with each other... number one to number one cylinder ...that sort of thing.. but back to my earlier post.. this is just a na 300 ... so a parts turbo 300 or Ebay might set you up on the pistons...

Where does one get an Izuzu motor? I want a motor like this...http://www.canev.com/Jeep.html and keep my 240 stock

I'd like a 2.8 or 3.3 .. are they available in US?

thanks
