bad lifters?
First, thank you all who helped me last time with the info about work on taking the head off on 300 dt 87.
I finally assembled everything together, and the engine works but had some problems with one injector. After I replaced it from another engine that runs good (car crashed), it works much better. While assembling the head I noticed that some lifters are soft under pressure and about 4 of them can be barely pressed at all. When car runs on higher rpm I hear a sound like something clicking and would like to change them, but can not find anybody that sells them. The second question is gas pedal, when driving pressed it sticks and does not release for about 3 seconds. When engine is off it does not stick. Third, can somebody tell me where is ALDA that I read so often about but can not find any reference in my book. (300dt 87). Thank you all. PS. This engine was leaking cooling into the cranckase and it was the reason I took the head off. It seemed to me that it was leaking on the gasket. I expected cracked head (14) but no cracks were visible and I put a new gasket and now does not leak. There are stilla few of this little problems before I can drive it. Thank you all. |

3) The ALDA is on top of the injection pump in the shadow of the intake manifold log. It's a flat square device with a capped setscrew on top and a barbed fitting for a pressure signal along one edge.

Before you replace the lifter/followers, try a quart of RISLONE. I had a friend with a '87 300d with the same problem. I put the Rislone in and it freed up the lifters. I have used this with success in Mercedes, VW watercooled (with hyd lifters) and air cooled VWs with hyd lifters. It cuts the varnish and frees them up. WON'T affect anything else.

Tried that on my 190D per Motorhead's advice and I think it's helping already after an hour of spirited driving. Will continue to add with synthetic oil changes. Thanks Motorhead.

The lifters are availible at the dealer or through any good parts house, like Phil for example. I think I paid about $26 each for mine a few months ago but I don't remember.
Lube the throttle links with ATF.

Also, my independent mechanic has recommended Swepco 502 for my lifter problem in my '88 190d. He has never steered me wrong yet so...
Im gona put it in with my next oil change in a couple of days. I'll keep you posted of the results. For more info I found this link. http://www.swepcousa.com/lubesite/add.htm I am not in any way associated with SwepCo.
