For long periods of time like + 1 month yes. Otherwise, why bother.

We are the chorus and we agree

Everything I've read and heard suggests that Tex is right. Up to a month, leave the battery untouched.

Longer than a month, disconnect it. Depending on other circumstances (weather conditions, age of the battery, etc.), you might then wish to consider removing the battery from the vehicle and storing it indoors on a piece of wood, not directly on metal or concrete (Why? I don't know. That's just what I was told.) Occasional use of a trickle charger would also be in order, say once a month for a day or two.

New batteries tolerate this storage routine much better than old ones, by the way. A battery that is already several years old will probably be dead in a month.

Ditto with TX an Jeremy,
If its a modern Mercedes or other vehicle with computerized systems and theft protection on it the battery would go dead in a month or so. The computer memory and anti-theft system continue to use current even wtih the ignition turned off. If your going to disconnect for winter storage, then pull the battery and store it where it won't freeze if the charge gets low.

When the battery is reconnected the computer will have to relearn/ recall certain commands ( the protocals are built into the memory to retrain the computer) so you may experience rough idle and transmission shifts until you have driven the car several miles after being in storage.
Cheers,

If it gets real cold where you live and you park outside, it can help to bring it inside and put a trickle charger on it overnight. It will keep it warm and charged for those really cold starts. Other than that, leave it alone unless the car will be inactive for 1 month+.

It is not possible to correctly answer to this question without knowing what model it is.
