MB Factory Published Mileage Ratings

Does anyone have old MB factory printed specification catalogs or brochures of W123's fitted with OM616 and OM617 Turbo and NA engines that have EPA city/freeway mileage ratings in them?

This is to settle an argument elsewhere.

My 1984 300D Window sticker declares a 27mpg rating... of course that an averaged sum.
617.952 engine, turbocharged diesel.

Thanks! I forgot about the EPA site. Too bad it doesn't go beyond 1985. I guess 1983 was the last of the 240D's.

I might as well spill the beans on why I am asking.

I am disputing ridiculous mileages claims on another forum.

Someone is claiming 38mpg out of a OM616 and 35mpg out of a OM617 (NA/Turbo). My points were variables in tire size, odometer function, and accurate fuel filling over many tankfulls that are right up to the neck which I believe in my opinion to be the biggest source of error.

He also claims 7-8000 RPM's are reliably capable from a 7.3 Powerstroke/Duramax/ISB and that it's just because of the long stroke of the crankshaft and that the IP's just aren't pushed to their limits.....

I have the ad

I have the actual Car & Driver advertisement from November 1981 right here in front of me and it says “29 EPA estimated mpg and 33 estimated highway mpg.” This ad was for a manual transmission.

It goes on to say *"EPA estimate for comparison purposes. The mileage you get may vary with trip length, speed, and weather. Actual highway mileage will probably be less.”

FWIW

I believe each of these cars are the final production year for that model.

That works, 29-33 makes sense. Would others agree that 38mpg is bunk unless the car is drafted behind a semi at 50mph?

Has anyone achieved 33mpg with their 4 speed manual over several fillups?

Maybe set the CC at 40mph on a very cold day and drive it on the flattest freeway in America?

34.7

I've gotten as good as 34.7 with my '84 TD. I'm sure it was very frustrating for anyone who happened to get caught behind me on that tank of fuel! Most of the driving was on the highway and forest service roads.

Too bad the figures are incorrect; it shows 22 and 25 highway, when the car should give more like 28 and 35.

I've purchased and run about 15 of these. Most of them 300D turbos.

I would say that any tank over 30 mpg is an anomoly. Something wierd happened.

I'm consistently at 24-28 mpg
