why does vacuum shut off get greasey

Howdy Folks:

AS I figure out this vacumm stuff I wonder why the vacuum shut off that comes and goes to/from key gets greasy - If the oil gauge were above I might see where this could come from - but no

ANy ideas as the vacuum lines to other places seem to be dry

Thanks in advance

Peace:

When the shut-off valve diaphragm gets tired, it allows the vacuum to suck oil out of the injection pump.

Your vacuum shut-off diaphram is going. Change it out soon or you will have oil in many of your vacuum lines and it will start to cause other issues. Clean out the affected lines after you change it out - I just blasted some brake cleaner through. Be careful though, it can make a black mess on your carpet Ask me how I know. Is your car slow to shut off?

howdy HockeyNut:

Car is slow to shut off - Only if I let it run a while - If I start and then stop it shuts right off

And I put the vacuum pump to the vacuum line and pumped it to 25"
it was a very slow drain - like .25" per minute

I now just pumped up the vacuum reservoir by hand - only managed to 15" before I gave out- all door locks apear healthy now

Thanks for the input - I will change this out just to be sure - is that easy or PITA

Peace

If your talking about the vacuum reservior. It is a large volume. If you pump it up to 15 inches, AND IT HOLDS, then it is OK. If it leaks down then it is leaking. Consider epoxy or Shoe Goop etc. Its just a plastic tank tha holds the vacuum.

If your talking about replacing the IP shutoff valve. A word of caution about a runaway engine if you do it wrong.

Heres the post for the job.

howdy Dave Morrison:

thanks for the reply:

Is not the vacuum reservoir- that is holding just fine

and I traced the cabin problem to the master control leaks about 1" per 2-3 seconds

interesting - I put the vacumm gauge on the solid yellow line at the end at top of drivers door - turned on engine - slow build up of vacuum - registered only about 2" but when I shut off engine - vacuum jumped to close to 6"

Turned on engine again - stayed at 5.5 - engine off vacuum jumped to 11"
went to turn on engine - would not catch - pulled off solid brown line and engine ignited

I must have messed something up

Peace:
