87 300sdl Fuel system questions

I was wondering if someone could explain the flow of fuel up to the injector pump. My main question is which appendage on the IP is the lift pump. There are two and either one could be it, although one has a couple extra hoses and seems to be some sort of plastic encased in metal (possible pre-filter?

Thanks
Will

It's the appendage sticking out on the left of the IP as viewed from driver seat.

Trace back from the injectors

Start at the injectors and trace back. When you get to where all of them lead you are at the IP. The other one is the lift pump.

Sorry about that. I interpreted appendage to be something attached. The fuel thermostat is attached to the crossmember or engine mount. It's not attached except by the fuel lines to the IP. As confirmed, the item that is physically bolted to the IP is the pump.

Thermostat

You're right the thermostat is connected to the crossbar...thanks.

So my next two questions are:

1- Is there an in the fuel tank screen or sock that if dirty could be limiting fuel flow. If so, can it be removed just like a 300D?

2- Does anyone know exactly how the thermostat works and what its function is? Does it keep the fuel at a constant specific temp. by cooling or heating? Can it get plugged and therefore limit fuel flow?

Thanks,

1. There is a screen in the fuel tank that can be removed and cleaned or replaced. The right axle is somewhat in the way of proper access but it's not so bad.

2. The thermostat is just a fuel loop into a coolant passage in the cylinder head near the oil filter block. It's simple enough to bypass the thermostat to determine if it's causing a problem. The typical failure of thermostat involves leaking, not blockage.

Never heard of a fuel t stat failing on a 603. What problem are you trying to solve?

Problem

Thanks for the information, I will remove the screen filter in the tank.

My problem is that fuel is not reaching the engine...so I thought I would work from the tank forward. I have a new filter.
