How do I check the fuel tank screen for obstructions? '92 300D 2.5T

I want to check my in-tank fuel screen for obstructions. How do I access it on a ’92 300D 2.5? Trunk? Under the car? Is this a difficult and time consuming job?

On a 123, it is above the differential under the car. It should have a large hex head that unscrews from the bottom of the tank. My suggestion is to pull the tank because if the strainer is plugged up then the tank needs to be clraned out as well.
If you are not sure if it is plugged up, pull the fuel line where it meets the chassis hard line in back and check how it gravity flows. I have gotten a temporary fix by taking the fuel cap off and CAREFULLY back blow compressed air through the feed line.

The biggest difficulties are handing the 46mm hex to get to the strainer and dealing with however much fuel is in the tank waiting to shower you.

Motorhead,

If the fuel tank screen is plugged its probably from fungus being in the tank. U will need to add a fungicide to the fuel to kill the fungus.

I have found that the tank does not have to be removed after using a fungicide but U should carry some spare filters as the dead fungus tends to plug the filters.

I have and use a fungicide in my diesels. My little 240 was so bad I had to pull the tank out to clean it out.

Motorhead,

What did U use to clean out fuel tank?

I couldn't find anything to dissolve the silicon rubber like fungus on my tank screen. I had to blow it clean with an air hose.

I removed the tank, washed it out with detergent and hot water, rinsed it, then i used the algecide with about a gallon of water and swished the tank. I think I let it stay in there a few hours(algecide and water) then rinsed it and dried it out using a shop vac with the hose on the ehxaust side of the vacuum. I also did it on a warm day. This was done about 11 years ago. I think that I have some in it again because the car sat for about 5 years in storage. I am going to re-dose it with the algae killer but not pull it.

The product I use is "KILLEM" made by FPPF Chemical in Buffalo NY. 1-800-735-3773
