What is the purpose of the tube that runs down the center of my oil filter housing on my 95 E300D? My 83 300D dosen't have this tube. What dose it do and when should the two rubber O-rings be changed? Jay

My '96 606 doesn't seem to have such a tube. Rather, there's a plastic piece attached to the cap which goes through the filter.

I assume that the O-rings close off the separate passages. When you remove the filter, the oil in the housing drains into the sump.

I replace the O-rings with every filter change. They come with the filter.

What brand filter are U using? I have used a lot of different filter brands and none of them had the small o-rings in the package, only the large o-ring for the top of the filter housing and some copper ring gaskets.
