Excellent writeup, Dave.

Invaluable for anyone attempting this in the future. Wish we had the same for the W126!

from what you can tell, is there any way to effectively brush the evap coil clean? looks like it's pretty awkward to get to.

Also, the fresh air element. what are it's functions when opened/closed?

none of my a/c elements are working. period.

thanks

Concerning cleaning... unless you have it out in your hand...and even then it would be tricky... the usual method is to use Foaming Cleaner... Pro AC guys buy it in concentrate form and dilute to specs with water.... spraying , letting the foam work , then rinsing is the safest method ...... and you don't want to use too much force when spraying .... bending just the outer fin means that whole airway is lost to the cooling function.
There are foams for interior and exterior fins on window units for example.. the one for outer is pretty caustic... would be safest to use the ' interior' foaming agent available...

Wow Dave! I just spent an hour and 50 minutes going through each pic, reading each text, going back to pic, etc.......
One of the best DIY's I've ever seen. Did you take a pic of both car interiors with the evap removed? Would be a cool pic to see.
Looks like quite the job, and you have a tremendous amount of folks very appreciative for when this time comes...
Now somebody needs to do a pictorial on cleaning the evap with it still in the car, so we will have both options to try.
Getting the center console assy out, along with disconnecting everything associated with it is almost the hardest part of dash removal. My center console wood assy doesn't have one of those tab pieces to secure it like that. That's a pretty thick piece of wood when you look at it.
Again, great job, and thanks so much. Who was your helper/photographer?

Wow, Dave, were you able to put it back together?? That was an impressive feat!!! Really!!

I was wondering, if all I wanted was to clean the evap coil, could there possibly be a way to snake some kind of a hose thru the vents and find its way to the evap. Since the evap has a drain, as long as its low gpm but somewaht high presuure, I would think it can be cleaned.

Is the heater core right with the evap coil?

Any thoughts on this, Dave?

Discussion has been done.

On both cars the heater core was clean. The air passes through the evaporator first, so it captures all the dust and crud.

Nice tutorial, however, the dash can be removed without removing the steering wheel.
