I gotcha. a clean evaporator is very important to get the cabin cooling as it should.

the only reason I kept explaining in more and more detail about the system pressures was for 134, the condenser is SOOOOO important.

with R12, not as important. lower pressures, and lower dissipation and pressure on the compressor issues.

I actually think that with a dirty evaporator, and condenser, putting in R134 is a death sentence. because it's nearly impossible to properly charge the system for correct heat transfer without blowing out the condenser lines...

if you get the evaporator spotless you would have a much better time, as the airflow would allow the system to function without liquid buildup...
cleaning the condenser or replacing it with a parallel flow gets the heat under control, and bobs your uncle. cool air.

115F temps... No thank you.

CERTAINLY not with NC humidity! I'd need the a/c system running perfect, and a window unit in each window cooling the car...

when the system was designed, R12 was the installed refrigerant.

with R134, and the PITIFUL condenser we are saddled with, cleaning the evaporator out will indeed raise the load and stress on the compressor far beyond what the system was originally designed for.

the suction superheat is somewhat moderated by the txt, the pressures will rise beyond original design specs for the R4, and failure will ensue. a clean and perfectly finned condenser will help, but it will NOT be enough. additional coil surface area is needed.

yes.

a clean evaporator coil will raise far beyond original specs when R134 is used.

the clean coil will DRAMATICALLY cool the vehicle better, but it will seriously stress the ac system when R134 is used.

Greg... MOST members on here have to use 134 and with 134, an R4 compressor, and the stock compressor... the life of the R4 is seriously diminished, and the stress on the system is very very high.

Vstech, you may not have seen my post where Trey of Carlisle Auto air said that getting an R4 after a certain serial number would make all the difference....as millions of those latter ones work just fine with the R134a.

Vstech... so are you suggesting if someone has a clean evaporator and changes to R134a that they throw some hair and dirt into the evaporator fins ?

Never want to visit the evaporator again.

I am knee deep in my slog toward replacing the leaking evaporator in my 1982 300D. Thank the ghost of Tom Landry for my fellow Texan, dmorrison, and his beautiful photos which guide my journey.
I do not want to see these deep recesses of my car again and wonder if a cabin air filter could be rigged to stop some of the crud from accumulating on my shiny, new evaporator.
Has anyone seen this done ?

Thanks again dmorrison.Hope the red 300DT is still riding the range.

I ordered the evaporator from local dealership and it shipped from Germany. Beware: this fits a Siemens heater box. Does not fit the Behr heater box. You should be able to see the brand of the heater box without removing the dash.
Modifying a Behr box is possible but after studying the necessary mods, I found a Siemens box in the junkyard, renewed the flap seals and actuators then resealed it. Check your heater core for leaks. Attached is a pic of the part label from MBZ Part # 123 830 14 58.

Nice tutorial, however, the dash can be removed without removing the steering wheel.
