I've got a '98 and love it. You can do some searches and find plenty of commentary on the common problems with each one. As far as power goes, the '98 and '99 are FAST.

My 1996 is a pleasure to drive but is slower than a 98-9 car.
These are excellent cars.

Thumbs up

96 thru 99 E-300 are great cars. The engine and streamline body style provide some excellent fuel economy....probably the best of any heavy 4 door sedan. 96 and 97 are non-turbo, 98 and 99 are turbo'd. I've driven both and found the turbo versions more suited for all the highway driving I do. They just pull better....feel more lively with a load in the trunk.

Mein Wagen

I have had a 1999 Turbodiesel since January of 2005. In the interval, I have covered some 24,000 miles. I am very fond of my car, but it has been costly to operate all the same because of fuel leaks, busted fan clutches, cracked dash boards, front end issues and all the indemic problems of this W210 model. And, I managed to get a speeding ticket with it, which is something that never troubled me with my 1979 240D. To be sure, I think it is a very fine car, in fact, and it imparts a feeling of safety, even if it is not as Panzer-like as a 1970s or 1980s Daimler-Benz car. I just took mine into the high Sierra and back, and found it comfortable, economical and safe, also with a full load. There is also a pleasure in finding diesel in semi-forgotten Gold Rush ghost towns and shocking the inhabitants at the peculiar habits of flat landers.

I forgot to mention the question of rust and the collapsing spring perches. Do look at the hair raising entries on this account here. I have my spring perches examined by the dealer on a regular basis....the rust problem was serious in Germany and in the snow ranges of North America. I saw a car brought to California from New York with considerable rust to the underside. My interlocutors there also saw their first case of a collapsed spring perch in an eight cylinder gasoline motored W210.

I'm going to keep mine.

Also some have had stuck glow plugs that are expensive to "fix".

Rust also mentioned by some at top of doors, back behind all the rubber, pull it all the way back if you look at one.

Otherwise, search here. Looks like key items already noted. Oh, brake switch failure, but that is cheap.

I really like mine, don't drive it much, but when I do I really like it.

Ask when the glow plugs were done. If they get stuck it's an expensive fix.

My car is in the shop now, they are pulling the head.

98 and 99s are fast comparedd with the non turbo ones. Comparing it with a 99 C280 and the C280 will probably blow it's doors off. I have chipped mine and it is faster and ok but not what I would like.
