How much for complete om617a???
I found a local car dealer with atleast 10 SD's in the parts area (a couple d's as well). I would LOVE to put a turbo in my sedan, so I beg the question, how much for a complete o617a? The guy said $895? Sounds a bit steep?
Secondly, how much work is it?

it would have to be pretty good to be worth that much imho.
i would ask for compression tests, mileage etc. if they are still in the car is best, if you can hear it run better and if you can lot drive it that is best. it should fire right off and idle smoothly. and have good power. tom w

More than the price that can usually be negotiated in my world is the condition. Never buy an engine you cannot run and properly check it out. You want to go over all his engines and select the one with the highest compression and best overall run quality. Too many used engines are sold that are really just boat anchors. Once in awhile you are fortunate to personally know a person with a ton of integrity and product knowledge. That overcomes the need for evaluation but they are not all that common. Perhaps I should say almost rare. Sometimes you can find a rustout if they are in your area with a really good engine as well. Selling off what you do not need may give you an almost free engine. My kind of deal.

Since I dont have the money on hand perhaps my best bet is to sit and wait for a wrecked one.

Too bad you're not close to southern Maryland - I have a 1981 300SD that's going to the junkyard soon. 188K miles. Was running great until the deer. Engine's fine...
