If like many of my cars you have no inkling of what if anything has been already done before I owned them it is quite the question. I kind of play it by ear so to speak. Fix anything obvious on a check over of course and wait and see. Most these cars will benifit from a serious engine tune up. Few get done. If averaging close to 30 mpg and have reasonable performance they do not need done. But if you are low on power or getting poor fuel milage in many cases a major improvement is possible. I guess changing the rear end fluid and the transmission fluid and filter might be wise if you do not know when they were done. On the other hand there are some who believe if the automatic transmission fluid looks good leave it alone. Change the manual transmission fluid out if you do not know when last done. Change the brake fluid and power steering fluid. Checking and cleaning principal wire connections and grounds does not hurt either. Give the brake system a good looking over and front end components. Also a check of rubber bushings, shocks, rubber axel boots, rubber boots on suspension components and especially the flex disks on the driveline. If they let go you might be in big trouble. Important to catch them on the way out. Carefully check all rubber hoses for any substandard conditions or just change them. Check the belts carefully for cracks etc. All it really amounts to is maintenance to try to keep the car good and safely serviceable and pleasant to drive and reliable. There are many other things one could add to the list. Just my opinions. Others will vary. You do not have to do it at 250k either but since you asked.

As part of the "tune up" I would check the timing chain stretch as well.

Inspect it and see what it needs. Usually by that time the chain has a bit of stretch and the injectors are getting tired. The front end if its original is due. If the shocks are original they are due as well.
I remember when I rolled the SDL over 250k last year. I did it at 110mph with the windows down and The Sand Man blasting. You only roll the over the quarter million mark once. Its fun rolling over the big mileage marks at close to top speed...

Other than the things recommended by the others here, I would just keep up with fluids and filters. After that, just keep on truckin'.......

I agree!! I rolled to 240k at about 35mph though (was on my way to work) 250k I'll be going pedal to the floor. I rolled 241k at about 88mph yesterday afternoon.....and will roll 242k sometime at the end of this week on my way back from up North. Yes, I have driven almost 4,000 miles in the past 45 days I'll probably be at around 245-246k by the end of August.....maybe more. I'll definatley have a ceremonial "passing of the 250k" event when it draws near for me....only 8,750ish to go! And for the topic of this thread, I'd say just do some preventative maintenance and check out everything to make sure all is ok.

However, at increasing chain elongation, the pitch doesn't match the sprockets and the sprockets start to suffer undue wear caused by the loading at the first few teeth. The timing chain is highly unlikely to fail unless one of the guides or the tensioning rail fails and pieces take out the chain. At 300K, engatawork has pretty much concluded that the oil pump chain guides are definitely on their way out. |
