No Mercedes Diesel

I debated whether to post here or at Open Discussion.

I have a lead on a gentlman who is selling two Ford Escorts (one four door sedan and one wagon). Both models have the Mazda diesel. What I am looking for car is a source on car values for these. I do not have the detail on these cars, but I know that both are early 1980's. I have checked on line and I have found some values for Escorts of this age, however, none of the places that I have check have accomidations for values of the diesel engine. At this point I have only seen the cars from the road. From what I can see they are not perfect, but I did not see rust holes that most cars of this age have in this part of Ohio. I hope to go see the cars this week.

Long before I knew that this man had these cars I had met him briefly a few times. He is a very nice person I want to pay hin a fair amount.

Thank you in advance.

Wow, I sold Fords briefly back in the 1980s and I would say the values on these cars is "not much." ... The early 1980s Escorts weren't worth anything as trade-ins in 1988-89, let alone 18 or 19 years later.

In my opinion the diesel engines typically installed in American cars (even a Mazda diesel in this case) are inferior to the German diesels in the Mercedes and even VW. Usually a U.S. passenger car (i.e., not a pickup) with a diesel engine is worth less -- even far less -- than one with a gas engine. And an Escort of that era isn't worth very much with the regular gasser under the hood anyway.

I don't know a source of prices, but whatever you found on gas-fueled Escorts I'd use as a baseline (condition of course considered) and not even dream of paying a nickel MORE than that, and probably less. ... Which I presume won't be very much money.

Good luck!
Glenn

They are worth how much it costs in parts to fix. I would imagine the parts ar hard to find, unless you dont plan on driving one...

It will depend on how much diesel is in their tanks. Book value they are probably below the $250 minimum value - to someone who want to tinker around maybe more.

Whats scrap steel worth per pound? I had the displeasure of riding in a late 80's Escort once, you couldn't pay me to take one diesel or not.

Thank you for the input. I was considering these Escorts as my winter salt sponges. Being Escorts I do not expect much from the chassis. I am a bit suprised by some of the comments about the engines. Not that I am trying to compare the Mazda to Mercedes, but I have read the the 1980's Japenese diesels were pretty good engines. Before the diesel cars of the 1980's some of them built other diesel engines. I remember a factory with Toyota fork trucks that were diesels.

Actually, these comments help me narrow down my resent desire to buy another set of wheels. I am also waiting for a call from the owner of 1958 190D. I friend of mine has a 1958 190 (gas) that is just beautiful and I have a hankering for one of those....as well as about 10 other Mercs.
