It's a custom badging job.

Hi Captain,

I, too, saw that vehicle on eBay and had to chuckle. The vehicle was sold in the US as a 300D, but the engine in that year's model was a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder turbo. Hence, if you want to be literal about it, it's a 250D, or an E250D if you want to go by the post-1994 Mercedes badging system. It looks like the owner of the car rebadged it an E250D, added the contemporary "turbodiesel" label, and did some cosmetic work on the front and back to make it look like a post-1994 124 chassis car.

Aside from the superficial cosmetic work, that particular model is a favorite of mine. It's got the modern comforts of a 124 chassis and the character of the 1980s models. I had a 1993 300D briefly, as well as a 1995 E300D (among several others models from various classes and years). I'm still particularly fond of the 1990s 124 diesels and do love the economy of the 2.5 litre turbo engine.

Happy car hunting!

DL

Craigslist?

You should also look on your boston area craigslist. They seem to have lots of older MB diesels listed there all the time. http://boston.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/search?areaID=4&subAreaID=&query=mercedes+diesel&catAbbreviation=sss

BTW, my 6.5TD is parked most of the time now as well. Its only driven when I need to take everyone and the dog out.

Don't know if I agree with that. It would be pretty retarded to go to that length for cosmetic purposes, furthermore to name it a E250D would be a downgrade from E300D for most. Now then- look at where the license plate goes, you'll notice that the recess that accepts the license plate on the front bumper is the appropriate width for a European license plate.
Look at any w124 US car of the same era and you will see the recess on the front bumper applies to the width of a US plate.
Sorry but I just don't see anybody going to the trouble of removing their 2.5 Turbo and 300D badges just to replace them with E250D and Turbo badges, furthermore I don't see anybody converting a pre-facelift car to a post-facelift car. That would be beyond stupid. BTW, I've actually seen E250Ds in the streets of DC, usually with diplomat plates. I think the wild notion of that car being a custom badging job is pretty funny. I mean come on- what would be the point?
