'78 240D mystery starting problem
I'm posting this on behalf of my husband "rimjob"... (aka Kevin)
pretty funny name I guess Anyway, my 240D is having a problem... this is what happened, maybe y'all can help. Generally, my car runs like a top, starts every time, his 240D is constantly needing a little of this or a little of that and mine is great. This morning I went outside to start it on my way to work and I turned the key and.... NOTHING... dead silence. No clicking, no effort to start at all. Nothing had been left on, radio and lights come on just like normal. Kevin comes out and pops the hood, fiddles with this and that, we try to start a few more times, still nothing... Finally, for no good reason, it just roars to life the next time I turn the key. We turned it off and on a few times just to see what would happen, with no problem at all. I went to work, drove home, drove like a dream until the last 3 blocks, it died twice, but I was able to get it going again to get home (the first time turned the key and it worked, the second I was coasting down a hill...). Now it's not starting at all. Any ideas? This is my daily driver... luckily I'm off tomorrow but I need this car to work for me for the rest of the week. Thanks, Elsje (aka "she-rimjob") |

The quittting on the way home as well is interesting. Unless the car has developed two separate problems. Almost wonder if something odd like a faulty ignition switch assembley for want of a better description that might be involved. At times no contact for the starter and at other times shutting pump down. The vaccum switch portion of the assembley might be involved. Take a wire from the positive battery terminal to the small terminal on the starter to see if it activates the starter normally. Or a short wire from the large cable to the starter to the small terminal on the starter. A screwdriver can probably jump the two points as well. If that works try the key switch again. If nothing I might be tempted to investigate there if car has never quit on the road before.

Rimjob,
Does your 240D have an automatic transmission? Series or parallel GP? P E H |

On my '81 240D, I had a similar problem. Put the key in and nothing. After messing under the hood, it started.
The battery terminal was tight on the positive side, the problem was the cable going to the terminal was loose and corroded. I removed the wire from the terminal and soaked it in baking soda water to clear the crosion, stripped very little insulation, dried the cable with heat, added some dielectric grease and re-inserted the cable so that when I tightened the terminal it crimpted down tightly on the wire. I have not had a moments trouble with starting since.
