Injector Pump Oil Level ??
 

Hello,
I have a 1971 220D and need to know the procedure to check and add oil to my IP. I looked at my owners manual and it said to unscrew the hand pump a few turns and add oil till it comes out of an overflow hole? I filled a small oil squirt can 2 times and emptied it but I never saw any oil come out. I'm afraid to keep adding oil and overfilling it. :confused:

Where did you add the oil?

I added the oil in the red oil cap that unscrews on top of the IP, I think it's called the vent in the handbook. I still can't really see any oil when looking down the vent hole. I'm not sure if it's wishfull thinking or not but the engine seens to be smoother since I added the first oil.

Doesn't anyone know this? :confused: :confused: :confused:

RobertC, the attached pic is from the owner's manual. Engine oil in at #6 and engine oil out at #5, just like a differential. Don't need to take #5 all the way out, but it will help in the next step: make a dipstick that you can store in the glove-box. Then you won't have to loosen #5 the next time.

Highly recommend you contact Phil at Fastlane. Probably can't get you the owner's manual, but there is a repair CD for the car. 1/10 the cost of an injection pump, and covers all but the transmission. Buying parts from Phil keeps this "free" web site going.

I am still kind of new to MB Diesel. Have had mine since the end of April, 1981 240D. Is this something I need to check on my MB? I asked once before and someone said that the oil from the engine also lubs IP. Is this true?

I believe your 81 OM616 is automatically lubed in circuit from the crankcase so you don;t have to worry about this procedure.

I just re-read my handbook and guess I just got the pictures wrong, I see the little plug now. I thought it was the primeing pump that you were supposed to unscrew a few turns, I just couldn't figgure that one out :P

The other issue with the IP's on the 115's is that eventually the internal leakage of diesel will dilute the lube oil in the IP sump. So periodically you need to syphon out the old fluid and replace with fresh oil to the over flow level. Not sure anymore what the recomended time interval is nor the correct type of oil to be used. I believe it is engine oil though.
