Picked Up A 1979 300SD....Need Some Advice
Hey Guys -
I recently purchased a '79 300SD, 129K miles with no dents and pretty good paint. The original window sticker (!!!) identifies her as 3.0L OHC Turbo and W116120 Chassis. I am pretty new to this forum and have read that these old W116's are great cars, but prone to rust and equipped with a persnickity, ill-fated Chrysler climate control system. Well, believe it or not, my 300SD has very minor rust localized to a front end engine panel... and the AC works! (but i still keep a bible in the gin bin). In fact everything works. Only some some minor switch issues with windows and sunroof that were easily fixed. So far a wonderful road car that runs strong and delivers about 28 mpg. Anyway, since i'm a newby i can sure benefit from your experiences/knowledge in the following areas: i have a large crack in the main fuse box cover in the engine compartment. anyone know where i can get a replacement part? I have service records thru 98K miles and the engine starts/runs great, but the engine compartment looks like it was last cleaned in 1979. Any recommendations on how to clean and with what cleaning products? I recently moved to Cape Canaveral Florida...close to Orlando....can anyone recommend a good mechanic for an old Benz? I owned a 1977 240D for years and used it as a commuter so i know that these old cars are not for the faint of heart. And that they generally have to be tinkered with frequently....so i'm sure i'll be posting again! Thanks |

Yeah.....you. Seriously. I bought my 1980 300SD W116 back in September, and didn't know a thing about diesels (or really anything mechanical, for that matter). Unfortunately, my AC shut down on over Christmas, so I ended up having to find heat quickly. Did a search on here, got some questions answered, and then I went off and bypassed the servo to run coolant through the cab for heat. Something I never would have done if I hadn't been reading a lot on here. Over the past year I've been getting more and more confident as I tackle bigger jobs on her. If you can't figure it out, the members here will be only too glad to help you - I know they have been for my questions. I'm the only mechanic touching her since I bought her, and I want to keep it that way. For some good info, look through the DIY articles and DIY links: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/forumdisplay.php?f=28 http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/DoItYourSelf As specifically for the engine, take a look here: http://www.peachparts.com/diy/detailing/detailing.php?location=index Now, your turn for information. We need you to edit your signature so that in future posts, we know what kind of a vehicle you have, miles, etc. That way you don;t have to post it each time. And drop us some pictures of that baby - everybody loves to look.

John Boy,
U can get the cover for the fuse box at MB dealer. Or try finding one in a junk yard. Someone here might have one they will sell U. I need one too so if anyone has one that isn't cracked, let me know. P E H |
