2nd seat headrests an option

My '85 300TD (wagon) has two 2nd seat headrests.

Recently I saw a picture of a w123 300TD (wagon) without headrests or even the holes they would slide into.

Were headrests an option or just on specific years?

I'd like to know that too. My car has the headrest mounts but no headrests. I always assumed that they were lost over the past 20 years.

I too have the holes, but no headrests. Too make matters worse, this never even bothered me until I read this post and walked outside and checked!

But one of the reasons I like the TD's is you can lay down the back seats and headrests would just get in the way...which is I bet what happened to them in first place. They were a pain to remove the first time and just never made it back in the car.

But the headrests are super easy to remove. They were probably just lost after being removed. They are not a pain at all.

Same with 560 rear foot rests, I hardly EVER see them in the cars still.

IF the wagon had the third seat installed, the second seats had 3 headrests installed for whiplash protection. I am not sure if the 2 headrest setup was an option in the wagon. I do know that the 2 rear headrests in the sedan were an option.

My 84 wagon has two 2nd row headrests, and factory 3rd row seating. The headrests store nicely when the seats are folded, so I'm not sure why someone would loose them.

According to my 1984 & 1985 w123 U.S. brochures;

Rear headrests optional on 300CD, 300D, and 300TD.
On the 300TD, three rear seat headrests come with the 3rd row seat package (as mentioned by dmorrison, for whiplash protection).

So it is then possible that some 300TD wagons were optioned with JUST rear seat headrests, 3rd seat and rear headrests, or none at all..... although cars that were not optioned with rear headrests did not come equipped with provisions for them. So if you have provisions, there were headrests for them at some point before your ownership.

Headrests for w123's are quite common in the used yards, and if you find a set that needs new covers due to fading, those can be ordered as well. See world upholstery for pricing.

If you are going to add rear seat headrests I would reccomend you find a set from the front seats of a sedan- as they offer the tilt function. Some 300TD's with rear headrests did not offer the tilt function for the rear seat headrests. The tilt function is surely an added comfort.

AND if you have a w123 sedan and would like to install rear headrests, it IS possible... and quite simple. MB still sells the mounting kit necessary for the installation. Then all you need are a pair of headrests. The mounting hardware is mounted to the inside of the back seat frame, then holes need to be cut at the top of the seat for the headrest guide posts. The kit includes the mounting hardware for the back seat frame, and the upholstery washers to insert into the post holes at the top of the seat back.

PM me for the part numbers. You need to order 2 kits (one for each side), which retail at appx. $70.00 each, depending on your dealer. Direct ship from Germany.

Veloce300DT

Your mail box is full and needs to be emptied.

Do you have a copy of the 300TD/D/240D sales brochure, I would love a copy. Does it have the measurement of the front/rear leg room??

Dave

Dave,

mailboxes emptied, sorry for any inconvenience!

I have a few brochures for the W123 Turbo models- 82-85, and a few 77-81 full line brochures which cover the w123 cars relatively well. Also have color charts from 77-85, and a ton of misc. brochures for various models spanning from the early 70's through to the mid 90's. Lots of W201/W124/W126 stuff etc.

If you are looking for a specific year/model brochure let me know. They all cover interior dimensions & measurements.

Are you the same cat that sells them on ebay? I bought a mint one for the '87 S-class on there.

No I dont sell them on ebay. Actually I just happened upon a collection of MB literature being sold by an enthusiast whom has moved onto Porsche cars...

So I ended up with pretty muuch everything he had collected from the 70's through 90's.. A complete collection of Star Magazines from 1981 thru to 2003, Star Fest literature, MB brochures, and even a 1970's 1:24 scale SL replica telephone.

I have spend some time sorting through everything.. I am keeping the Star magazines, and some of the brochures. But I am willing to part with any non-w123 related literature.. There is also a W201 190E-2.3-16 brochure that i'd like to hang onto. Lots of w126/w116/w201 stuff though. And there are a couple of w116/w123 brochures that I have duplicates of which id be willing to pass on to an enthusiast...

Headrests in Wagon

I hate the fact that my wagon doesn't have headrests. When I run my finger across the top of the rear seat I can feel where the indentation is for the headrest posts. Does anyone know if I can just get some headrests, cut the vinyl and pop them in or is there some kind of kit you have to have as mentioned above?
