valve adjustment

Diesel giant specifies having the cam lobe straight up I have allways had the lobe toward the oil tube not straight up and the shop manual shows the cam lobe not straight up which position is correct or does it matter?

on my 85 300DT valves are adjusted with the lobe pointing toward ~1pm - not straight up.

Lobe toward the oil tube.

Cam Lobe off center on each valve you are adjusting, just like the picture shows.

After you adjust the valves, crank the engine one full revolution, then recheck all the valves, adjust only the ones that are tight, crank the engine one full revolution, then recheck all the valves, they should all be OK now.

With that, they may be a hair loose than the FSM method.

In any case, loose valve lash is better than tight lash.

This is a really old thread. And the original poster did not read the tutorial correctly on DG's site. DG states that you want the lobe pointed "straight up relative to the adjusting pad". Also, if you scroll down about 6 pictures, it is obvious that the cam lobe is "off center" relative to the center of the cam from the top.

Writing these tutorials takes a lot of time and patience and I applaud him for taking the time to do so.

Do you know what the DG site said in 2006?

In which case the lobe isn't "straight up" after all. What's an "adjusting pad," anyway?
