Air compressor won't pressurize!
Alright I know this has nothing to do with diesels (other than I need to do some sand blasting on my diesel) but ya'll are the smartest people I know when it comes to the garage and I know alot of you must have air compressors so here's my question... My compressor is a Crapsmen, about 5 years old, 4.5hp, horizontal tank. Ran perfectly for awhile and then I didn't use it for about 2 years. I kicked it on and it will only pressurize to about 50psi no matter how long I run the compressor. It doesn't lose the pressure though. I put some oil in it and still only 50psi. I can't hear or detect any air leaks but I suspect it's not that simple. I also tried adjusting the regulator. Any ideas what the problem is?

It could be that the rings are stuck, so you can only create so much pressure. I had to replace them on an old compressor I had. It was shooting oil out of the crank case vent. (my first experience with blow by, as it turns out)

It could also be dirty or sticking valves. If you're lucky, Sears still sells the rings and valves. Somehow, I doubt that you're that lucky, but I wish you the best.

Take a look and see if you have the Crapsman that has the plastic cylinder. If yes - go shop for a new one. When mine went south, I was shocked to see what they used to compress air.

If it was going to 100-125 lbs the last time you used it a couple of years ago you might luck in. There is a valve between the compressor head and the tank. To test shut down at fifty pounds and see if that tank pressure is maintained. If that valve is bad you should hear the blowoff valve usually around the pressure control continually leaking when off until tank is depleted. This may or may not affect overall compression build up. I would think not generally. But they may be using it for an exhaust valve on a cheap compressor as well. It's real function is to unload the compressor for easy starting in normal designs. I cannot see the blade valves being bad unless they have accumulated serious rust. They are just tempered steel so if storage conditions were really damp it might be possible. You could pull the head and make a new gasket with a five dollar gasket punch set as you have nothing to loose by checking the valves. That compressor is either a fairly easy fix or probable junk. I have had my share of compressor problems over the years. I also do not know how the motor is coupled to the head. But make sure their is no slippage after a certain load has been reached.

Thanks for all the help, I tore it apart and found two head bolts sheared right off and the o-ring gasket blew out. I replaced it all and it's running perfectly!
