Question '87 300sdl - spin on fuel filter

I want to swap out both fuel filters. The inline filter is not a problem. The problem is the spin on filter. There are hoses on both sides of the filter (I believe 3 banjo bolts on one side and a long stiff black hose on the other). What is the reccomended way to remove the filer and replace it? I know to loosen the bolt at the top to remove the filter, I'm not sure where to go next.

As you mention, just remove the center bolt

the filter will come out then, it will be a tight fit with little space to work with, I just feed the filter out the front of the engine between the fuel return line and the upper rad hose, both offer enough play to swap the filters.

Hope that helps

Make sure the can is fully filled with fresh fuel before you secure it. It's not easy to do because of the location, but, it won't be at all pleased if you leave any air at the top.

Placing it back in between the hoses and such then using a small funnel to top it off with diesel/VO works well.

Thanks again.

Big J,

Why do U want to R&R the filters? Have U noticed a loss of power going up a hill?

Its a myth that new filters filter better. Its just the opposite. Fuel fiters are good until they won't pass the required amount of fuel for full engine power.

If U get clean fuel and don't have a fungus problem, the fuel filters will last for the life of the car.

Buy new filters and always carry them with U. U never know when U will get contaminated fuel that will necessitate R&R the filters on the road. Carry the necessary tools for R&R too. I know from experience this can happen..

PEH,
The car is new to me, as PM and so I can keep tabs on when things were done, I'm doing an initial change of filters.

It makes a mess, you have to tilt the filter a bit to get it to fit. So fuel spills everywhere.

Make sure to replace the O rings on the bolt. If you purchase an OE filter it comes with them.

Big J,

New to U or not, your are just wasting your time and money replacing filters that are OK.

I've seen posts here where replaceing filters for no reason caused a lot of trouble.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
