Failed Ct emissions test today......

I took my 84 300CDt with 93500 original miles to get inspected this morning and it failed because the opacity reading was high, normal reading should be 20% and mine was 20.8%.

I did find a couple of old threads on opacity but it looks like their opacity readings were below 20% at the time the cars were being inspected.

Work that was done to the car (that I know of):

Air filter replaced May 06
Valves Adjusted July 06
Oil Chg 12-05 (this car has not been used since Dec 05 until July 6, 2006)
Fuel Filters chgd May 05

I would like to know how I can fix this, I need to re-take this test within 30 days.

Thanks for any advise you might have....

You were so close...

A diesel purge, and an italian tune up should probalby get you the 0.9% you need.
Otherwise further tuning to remove the soots will increase NOx.

CT sux, glad to be in TX were we don't have to have emission checked.

In Colorado we have to do it EVERY year... It makes me mad 'cause I know both of mine will pass with flying colors, yet I have to pay $45 a pop... Then I see the UHaul trucks belching huge clouds of smoke as they go - they're probably exempt...

Would any of the injector cleaners help?

I'll see if after rush hour I can go for a "tune up" run on I95. Do I need to perform this tune up in any particular gear or will "D" be OK? Will do a search on this anyways.

Thanks for the info!

It really needs an italian tuneup, and it should be tested fully warmed up. Properly running, it should pass raher easily, mine has always passed, even with the pre-rebuilt engine with lots of blowby. When it's 25 years old you won't need to test it anymore.

There are always a few "tricks" to pass emissions on mechanically controlled diesels. They are not exactly legal but bypassing the EGR isn't legal either.

They never looked under the hood at my EGR blocking plate. However, that brings up a good point. The EGR is only supposed to open at part throttle, not at idle. But if the valve is stuck, who knows? Worth spraying some PB on it and making sure it moves, better yet, remove it for thorough analysis and replace it with a plate.

You can (and should) watch them the whole time during the test. Every test site is required to have customer visability of the test, ever since they discovered the system was hopelessly compromised by corruption

Yeah, I was able to watch the whole thing, ke backed the car up onto the rollers and stuck the probe in the exhaust pipe and gave it gas/diesel for a few minutes.

Before that he checked under the hood but it looked like he didn't know what to look for, he really looked clueless under there.

What I didn't do and have been reading that some people do is run the engine for a long while before the test. I just drove it 10 miles and let it sit for about an hour ( I got there early, first come first serve policy) and then the test was done.

I'll wait a week and try it again the indy shop that did the valve adjustment suggested I add BG44 to the fuel, that might help.

Thanks,

I used one of those "guaranteed to pass" emissions products once. One of only 2 times I ever had anything fail. And the "guaranteed or double your money back" is a total joke. Covering the disclaimers on it would cost way more than twice the cost of the product

Guy's we have the same thing here in British Columbia Canada, its called Air Care and everything that has 4 or more wheels Must attend an Air Care session once a year and every year to follow. Depending on the type of vehicule the basic cost is $28.00.
When I first got my 300 SD 1983,the previous owner failled to pass Air Care on the last year that he had the car,all because the EGR vaccum hose had broken off.So off i went to the local wrecker got myself an EGR valve for $50.00 and passed Air Care with flying colours
