I forget how, but you can actually order a copy of the original window sticker. You'll find that these were $30K+ when new.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

It's possible that I misread the bill of sale... after all, it is a carbon copy from 1984, LOL.

I'll take a closer look at it later. I sent in my VIN to the link that was provided here. We'll see what they can send me.

Keep the comments and advice coming guys, every bit is helpful, and thanks a lot for all the help you've given so far.

- Tim

Just thought I would post an update.

Found a trustworthy mechanic near my home who is going to check out my A/C system.

I was amazed when I spoke to him. I told him the car's year, make, and model, and the first words out of his mouth were:

"That should be an R-12 system. It's a little more expensive to recharge, but should last you much longer and perform better than most modern systems."

I asked him:

"What exactly do you recharge the system with?"

His verbatim reply:

"Real R-12. I don't use that Freeze-12 crap, it'll wreck your system. It's cheaper, but trust me, you'll be sorry next summer."

They are charging $29.95 for a complete A/C inspection, and $60 per pound of R-12. He said if he recalled correctly, these cars used 3 pounds total, but he said he might be wrong.

Talk about a pleasant surprise. I was expecting a line of bull***** about converting. Guess I know who I'll be going to now.

That's probably about right for retail through a shop. I'm having mine done right now, and I think I'm paying around $50 per pound.

new car

Gratz on your car Tim. I got my 1984 300d 2 years ago with 120k miles on it, and in practically brand new condition i was amazed. Mine too cam from TX but i paid $4000. I would have to say it was well worth every penny. I live in NC and ppl have offered me 6k for it, but i want to keep it. I would say to you ALWAYS do you routine maintaince for the car. Doing so will raise the life expectancy of the car greatly. I love it to death and it is a very good quality automobile.
