33 mpg

a 240d with 285k miles. and a clutch. was making a mess in driveway. with a fuel leak. tightened the top of the primer pump and leaking much less as a result. or maybe not leaking. can't distinguish. anywho 382 miles and 11.6 gallons of lsd! wonder if 'we' could achieve 35mpg if i got off my duppie and adjusted the valves. oh, before leak, item was getting around 30 mpg. in warm weather. cold weather the type of driving i do, get in the mid 20's.

Why the difference?

Why would there be a difference in the fuel usage because of the cold? Is this common with deisels or is there something else that I'm not aware of that is part of the equation?

in the cold parts of the country diesel in the winter is blended with kerosene so it wont gel up which lowers the fuel milage

If I end up keeping my 240D, I guess I should give it a tuneup. Before the odometer broke, I was getting anything from 20 to 24 mpg on summer fuel (shifting at the dots and often running flat out on the highway of course ).

Interestingly, the 240D replaced a 2100 lb (curb) Suzuki Samurai that was getting about the same mileage under the same conditions on RUG.

Because of the potential gain I believe a good general tune up is a good ideal. Especially if fuel milage is in the low twenties as well. Use every system available to identify and eliminate sub standard conditions. Many of these examples are way overdue to put it mildly. This also should lessen your cost. Also should result in a power boost and you do want all that is available there on this model. Sometimes the difference will be substantial.

How fast were you going to get 33mpg? The best I've ever gotten was 29.4mpg at 55-60mph for about 200 miles up north. I again got 27.6mpg doing mostly 55mph and about 150miles of 75mph on a 407 mile trip. Pretty good for an SD I'd say....normally I only get about 23.5-24.5

in town driving for perhaps half of the tank. the other was relatively slow. spent time touring the northern neck of virginia. lots of back country roads. some even gravel. definately no high speed stuff. say 40 mph for part of the trip. then some 65mph on the way home.
