As a NJ native I can tell you that registration wont be your problem so much as inspection. No matter how you register it it will fail inspection. On a 1987 car they will look for all the orignal smog equipment all the way down to the gas cap. Since its noe a diesel they will just outright fail it.
One option is the Reconstituted vehicle title. This is the type of title you would get by building a car from spare parts. This is a very difficult title to get in NJ cause the DMV is the devil. Your best option for a car like this is to wait a few months till 2007 and register as a "classic car". They are inspection exempt. However, there are some restrictions like mileage, the details of which escape me at the moment. Sadly, in the Garden State they just dont like people to drive old cars. They do thier best to make it attractive for you to buy new cars( 4 year insecdtion stickers) rather than try to keep your 10 year old car on the road(gas cap inspections failures). |
