'77 240D loses low speed power when weather is hot

Yea, I know that a 240D with an automatic IS a slug but..... When the outside weather gets hot, it will barely get out of its own way from idle to about 1000rpm.

I have changed BOTH fuel filters.
I have the altitude compensator backed off all the way
The fuel strainer in the tank is clean
It gets FULL throttle
I don't believe the valves are tight

It sometimes wants to go from a stop but then loses a little power. Once it starts to rev up, it runs great all the way to 80. I can climb grades without power loss.
Can the primary fuel pump be going bad?
Leaving a signal lights gets interesting, I push it to the floor to get it to start in first but sometimes it still creeps until it gets rpms up a little.

Any suggestions????

No other input as yet. I have since adjusted my valves, checked the chain stretch issue (OK), and changed the fuel pressure relief on the aft side of the inj pump. The only other thing I am going to try is changing out the primary pump with a used one I have. If it works, I'll let you know.

Might clean your tank strainer or try a different fuel station.

Have you checked the injection timing? Did the problem exist before you adjusted the altitude compensator?

I checked the injection timing with a Snap-on tool that ataches to the injector line and creates a signal for a strobe timing light. It was ok. I adjusted the Altitude compensator all the way out. It had more power after but didn't help the take off from idle when it is HOT outside. Pretty baffeling!

Whats the condition of your tranny fluid if automatic? A torque converter trying to go out or slipping clutches/bands can give similar symptoms.

An automatic 240D? Torque converter transfer would be my first guess, probly do a complete fluid flush including the torque converter. Heat sensitive stuff - tranny fluid. And fluid should be red not brown when you check it.

I would like to know that too. And then compare it with start of fuel delivery specs.

I think that it was close to 24 degrees. I'll check it again tomorrow and let you know.

240dog... what do you mean by "torque convertor transfer"???

What I mean is that torque converters operate like a fluid clutch that transfers torque, sort of like two fan blades opposed to each other. Have never heard of an MB torque converter going South, but quality of the fluid has got to be important. I think MB recommends tranny fluid and filter change each 50k miles or so. And you've got to line up the TC drain plug for thorough tranny fluid flush. With your own filter and gasket combo should be $45 labor at valvoline quick oil change shop. Otherwise a bloody mess with millions of tranny pan bolts, dumping the fluid yourself. Then if nothing else at least you've accomplished a healthy maintenance item.

Does it feel like the tranny is slow to grab from standing start? Or are you certain the problem is engine related?
