Stop battery post crud

What do you put on the battery posts and cable ends to stop the corroding crud?

There some special pads that go under the clamps and a chemical spray that *help* prevent acid buildup. You can find both at any auto parts store.

When I read the thread title I thought you were upset at people for posting crud about batteries.

Grease applied to the battery terminals also stops corrosion, dialectric silicone is even better but both edventually collect dirty and look messy, but messy is still better than a poor connection

When you check your oil let a few drops hit the posts and youll never see corrosion again.

I really like winmuts suggestion so much I will use it myself. I used to lay a couple of pennies on top of the battery for the acid to eat. They had a large percentage of copper back then. The acid seemed to focus on the pennies instead and eat them. Battery posts stayed normal. The pennies seemed to act as sacrificial anodes. The last time I did this there did not seem to be as much effect. Probably the alloy mix of pennies has changed like everything else.

Why didn't I think of that?
I went the baking soda route but I will switch to oil.
Thanks.

Coca-cola...... just pour some coke on top of the battery and watch it eat the acid-fungus garden right in front of your eyes.

coke.

240 diesel dog. Classic or regular? Seriously I have always heard it was good to clean windshields with as well for serious coatings. But have never tried it.

Dialelectric grease will cure it, but that's expenesive to buy if one considers its limited use. So, try a coating of ordinary pertroleum jelly (aka Vaseline) on the posts and cable inserts.

I coat mine with good ol' wheel bearing grease...crude but effective. I like the oil drip idea!

Now, my Dad, after a good battery terminal cleaning and making tight connections, grabs a can of any old color spray paint and paints the posts. He has been doing that for years and it seems to work for him...but I don't like the mess it can make or the way it looks....but I do it on my tractor where dust would just made mud outta the grease.

Works like a charm. Some old bogger offered that piece of advice to me when they tried to sell me the felt washer thingies. At the time I had some very large speakers in my car that caused all kinds of electrical problems.

If you really want to stop battery corrosion.....

You need a new battery. (yes, I'm being lighthearted, but....)

I worked for General Battery / Exide for 15 years. They tended to have cruddy battery terminals. I've been buying Johnson Controls the past 10 years. No more cruddy terminals. Draw your own conclusion.

We used to say, take away the air, and the terminals can't corrode. So, clean them really well, put them together, clean and tight, then grease them up, so they dont' get any air.

If you don't like how that looks, they try to buy a battery brand that stays dry.
