I'm going to check behind the firewall to see if I'm losing coolant there. I hope so

Get a pressure tester........that's the only way you're going to find a leak........if you have a leak...........

Mine runs just above 80 except when stopped in traffic for a long time (1.5 hrs a couple weeks ago, accident on the interstate), and when climing long grades on I68 with ambient temps above 95F. Even then, it's never hit 100C.

250,000 miles while on that trip, too!

Just did the bi-annual coolant change on the silver 87 300Dt. Flushed with pure H2O (three flushes till clear) then dumped a gal of MB antifreeze in it. My 87 300Ds (both of them and with #14 heads too BTW) run at 83C to 85C going down the road at 60 to 70 MPH. On a hot day it sits around 90C. Uphill on a long stretch it pushes 95 to a hair under 100 but that takes a steep incline and dropping down a gear in the switchbacks where revs stay up. AC on. I have never seen over 100
New everything in the cooling system.

My 1987 300TDT seems to run at around 90 degrees C in town (maybe a little higher if it is warm outside, like a 100 degrees F or above). The only time my engine heats up is going up a steep grade (like Cuesta grade in San Luis Obispo) in which case the engine temp will rise to over 110 degrees C if the outside temp is around 80 degrees F. If the outside temp is close to 100 degrees F, my 300TDT would most likely overheat climbing a hill so I have be very careful when the temperature is warm outside and I am climbing a grade. Ocassionally I will see the temperature rise up slightly during a hard acceleration as well. All of the temps mentioned above are without A/C running. If the A/C is on then it will run hotter of course.

I am still chasing down an overheating problem that I have had since I bought my 300TDT as well.

-Steve
