Question 240D Heater Valve - Disconnected

Okay, so I've done alot of searching but I haven't come up with this particular situation. I've consulted my Haynes and the MB Service manual, but to know avail. I'm still at a loss.

Manual Climate -

I have no idea how bad it is, but the coolant hose to the driver's side of the heater valve has been disconnected at its entry into the firewall. Looks like it's been this way for a while. There's a tiny orifice in the hose that's completely clogged. You'd think that there'd be coolant all over but there's none. Also, no heat on the pass. side that's still hooked up.

Can someone lead me through what I need to check to get this thing in order?

What are the consequences of this kind of thing left unchecked?

I don't remember exactly how the 240D's is plumbed, but I would guess that there is a leak in a heater core. This has usually been the case when I have found a heater disabled.

Wes, say it ain't so.
Makes alotta sense though.
Do you suppose that the clogged line is an intentional plug?

I guess it's time to start tracking' down rebuilt heater cores. Any suggestions?

SO I've discovered that coolant flows to the valve, the pass side is able to open and close that valve, although no detectable heat in the cabin but I may be too hot to feel it (no A/C).

First question, does coolant at the valve mean that the heat pump is working?

Maybe posting a new thread soon. Coolant at the radiator bubbles a little and has a dramatic change in level with the cap off. Blown head gasket??

I can't help much because it's been over twenty years since I had a 240D. Maybe someone who has one will chime in shortly.......

(By the way, I really liked the heating/cooling system in my '78 240D. Being able to individually set the passenger's or driver's comfort level was great. Wish my '82 300D did that.)

You can hook up a different hose to the valve and pour regular water into it. If it does leak, plain water is better to clean up than coolant.

Forced, thanks for your input.

Turns out that I do have heat on the pass side. Very hot at the defrost. Pass side dial works to open and shut the valve. Driver's side does not. Bowden cable must be shot somewhere in there.

Next step is to unhook the pass side hose from the firewall connect and see what the opening looks like.

Then I'll investigate reattaching Bowden cable.

Is it possible that the heater core could leak from one side only??

As for the head gasket - I think I'm becoming a Diesel Hypochondriac.

Thanks for your help.
