Yeah, it seems like there might be a problem too big for you to fix. Hard to tell when running veg oil, because one big variable is the quality of oil that you have been feeding the engine. You very well could have sucked in water, which would not be a good thing. That's why I don't like to use the factory filter for the veggie. The glow plug light problem seems like bad plugs to me. Easy to test with a multimeter. Just pull the connection at the relay, and test each terminal.

Did they fix the glow plug problem? I really don't know what to say about your problems with the engine, something isn't right but without seeing it I don't know what could be the problem. Sounds like you need to take it to someone knowlegeable about veggie conversions.

¿same problem?
It appears I am having a very similar problem. My car wont start hot on diesel and wont run on diesel without serious help on the accelerator. Cold start on diesel involves putting my foot on the floor and cranking for about 10sec, finally it sputters to life. Starting on veg is easy, it just rumbles to life, idle is perfect on veg. One thing I was thinking was possibly injection timing? I believe I read somewhere that a diesel engine running veggie oil will run great with the timing a couple degrees off. Does anyone know anything about this sort of thing? How does one go about adjusting this? I tried messing with the rack damper screw to no effect. I am totally stumped, but I need to get this thing going...

I would start by replacing both veg valves (those sound like the pollacks, that break down) with GC's newer valves or Frybrid's valves, replumbing the system to work with two 3 ports instead of the original GC design (simpler plumb), prime, and see if that helps. You should probably do this anyway, as the GC design has changed. I made the switch. It could be that your valves are tweeked. The pollacks are good only to 180 degrees, and the inside can get crapped.

How is the new design plumbed? Do you have a diagram?

email me at rblookc@yahoo.com and I'll track it down. it's plumbed differently from the original version I think.

Still have problem...
Picked it up from the garage last night...started of fine ( idled a little high) by the time I got home it was racing..adjusted idle screw down 1.5 turns so it didn't sound like it would explode..back to stalling..
At the garage they did replace the glow plug controller..tested plugs, injectors, compression, fuel lines, drained tank, tried damper bolt. I am back to thinking air leak at the regular diesel filter (if I switch to grease I get an almost instant change, well before the fuel change its the engine) I have isolated everything thing else previously, even disconnected the grease system. I plan on bypassing the filter and we will see what happens .. the only other thing that comes to mind is the vacuum regulator...but I don't see why there would be the diesel/grease difference |

any progress?
Did you fix it? My alternator just died, but once I get that sorted out I will be back at this problem. Please let me know what you have tried and what worked, because we are having the same problem (same symptoms of stalling on diesel, and instant cure when switched to veggie).

i don't want to be a portent of bad news but it all sounds like the IP is dead or on its last breath... Good job dude another MB bites the dust.

how?
Quote:
IP "dead"... What does this mean? What might have "died" in the IP to make it not hold idle, but run fine otherwise? could it be as simple as some spring inside the pump failing? I was doing some reading about a ball/spring arrangement in the fuel system (I think in the IP) that maintains fuel pressure... could this have failed? If so that would be an extremely easy fix... or so it seems from looking at the shop manual. Any takers? |

That's the problem with taking to a mechanic. It doesn't sound like he knows about two tank systems. But let me just say this, it's been said already but bears repeating -- if it runs fine on VO, the problem lies in the part of the system delivering diesel.
Not the IP, not the injectors, not the engine. It's beyond me why these get checked, and the hoses, filters and valves on the diesel side do not. It would be easier to offer suggestions if you could post a picture or describe how the fuel system is plumbed.

Run a one tank system. As long as you install an after glow feature, have electric and coolant preheaters and proper injector nozzles you are good to go even in sub freezing temperatures.
