617 performance

What kind of engine modification can be done to the 617 engine and what kind of horsepower gains could one expect? Im aware of modification to the Ip with bigger elements but what kind of power will this add? I have read a number of threads where most people say if you want horsepower go to a 603. I personally have a 240d but eventually im going to swap it to a 617 and im curious if any horsepower can be gained besides the stock 120. Im not talking about 100 plus horsepower, but could 150 -180 horses be acheived?

Mike

I guarantee you there's no 120hp available at the rear wheels from a 617.952. It's more like 90hp.

Significant and very expensive modifications can be done to increase the airflow, the fuel flow, and reduce the EGT's. After you've spent about $4K or so, you'll get the engine up to about 150 hp or so.

The economic sense of such modifications are questionable.

You could just mount a couple 30-50hp rocket boosters under the rear bumper, and have them activate with the kickdown switch, that'd be a relatively inexpensive extra 60-100hp!! Certainly less than $4000

62BHP: Do a set 0-60 MPH tests and reply with the average. If you are like mine and slink along at 18 seconds then you have some possibilities. But if your around 14 seconds, good luck without big $ or as some have learned about this addiction, MB (Mercedes Budget).
Anyhow, once you've posted these #'s the lurkers on this site can help.
