On W123 Class, is Exterior Color related to Interior Color (repainting 85 300D)

On the W123 Class, is Exterior Color related to the Interior Color? I am having my 300D painted. The car was previously metallic silver with the Mustard yellow interior. I changed out the interior to a Dark Navy interior I pulled from a dead W123 with 120K on the odometer.

I've been told Mercedes would never manufacture a Dark Navy Interior with a Dark Navy Blue exterior and that there is a relationship bewteen the two colors. A Dark Navy Blue exterior would probably have a tan leather interior. Dark Navy Blue is my favorite color for this car.

Of course I dont have to follow this rule, but I would like to try to. After all I am not painting my 300D Fire Engine Red, Pink or with Zebra Stripes all over it.

We had a 1980 Wagon that had dark blue inside and a lighter blue outside. I'd say go for it. I have an 85 wagon that is dark blue outside and palomino inside and I'm sure that it would look fine with blue inside.

W123 Exterior color vs. Interior color

Meow
My 84 300TDT is dark blue exterior & dark blue MBtex interior (original options when new) .. SO if you like dark blue go for it!

I don't know the answer, but I suspect blue/blue was not a factory option (Old Geek- were you the original owner?). I, too am curious about this, but on W116s as I have bamboo inside and will probably paint her dark blue outside. Does anyone have any factory color combo data? Maybe the sales brochures of the period had this sort of stuff on it?

Rich- you can always do some work with SEM vinyl paint, I suppose. Are you going to use a factory exterior color? BC/CC or SS? What did you decide?

i do not believe there was any limitation put on what exterior could be combined with what interior. I have seen pretty crazy combos particularly on the first generation W123's. all originals. all verified by the mercedes archives.
you do not need to be the original onwer to know what was the original colors because these colors are written on the ID plaque under the hood and are retriveable for all cars with VIN.

I have seen blue/blue W123s numerous times. I know first hand that MB had some strange color combos from the factory, like our green/green 1981 300SD.

Why not just repaint it the original color?

Unless you changed your interior...

My '84 300TD is #904 Midnight blue with #152 navy blue MB Tex interior. I'm not sure that I would have picked that color combo if I'd ordered it new, but it's not too bad...

Follow up on Interior/Exterior colors

rs899,
No I am not the original owner (2nd owner) - but I did sleep a Holiday Inn.. I have looked at the car's ID plaque, and then 'decoded' the listed options - 904 & 152...

Note - previous owner really liked blue - he also tinted all the side windows and tailgate blue

OK then, I guess MB was "have it your way" back in those days. Blue on blue is too much for me, though.

According to the 1983 Color Chart, the blue interior was available with the following blues: 900 Deep Blue, 904 Midnight Blue, 355 Diamond Blue and 929 Nautical Blue. Check out this link to see the paint colors. http://www.astralsilber.de/

PM me with your email and I will send you a photo of the 1983 Color Chart. It shows color combinations.
