If you have the old style primer pump, is the handle properly latched?

It's that thing at the end of the fuel line with the clear filter. The old style has a finger loop like the engine oil dipstick. To use it, twist the loop CCW then pull up, push down, etc. When primed, push in and turn CW. Idle will be rough if the loop isn't properly stowed.

sixto ...great will check it out tomorrow...and the pressure on the air filter cover making it rattle and when i push on it ...takes some real force the rattling stops so ...the air filter is getting some serious back pressure...thinks it has to be bad news

Can you start from the beginning please.

I've just not got the memory that I previously had.

What did you do to it.........and exactly what are the current symptoms?

Did said symptoms exist prior to the current work that was done........or not??

Hey Brian ....first of all thanks for the advice on the gears swap ..what a diffenece... three weeks ago left Danville IL with full tank..and filled her up in Cambridge Ontario...660 miles at roughly 65 average..

The car is sometimes smooth at idle ...but the further i go the rougher it gets..sometimes in traffic i give it accelerator and brake to stop the shake..
less shake in neutral but still rough...smooth at highway speeds...ps...my oil pressure gage drop to about one and half at idle goes right back up at speed.

the air filter wants to go airborne from the pressure i have to really place some serious hand pressure on it to stop the rattle...

dont know if the problems are connected....hell defies all i know about intakes...when they start pushing air...

thanks again

Did anything that you did from the gear change affect the engine?

Were these symptoms present prior to your work?

I'm not understanding the "air filter wants to go airborne". The air filter is secured by three nuts at the bottom of the canister........it's not going anywhere.

Please try to help me understand what you've got there. It impacts the solution.

Start from the beginning.........when did these symptoms develop?

No Brian the swap was great no negative results all positive ..have perhap 2o K on the swap now ...

these problems are recent...one week...

ok air cleaner is getting pressure to the extend that the top of the cleaner was tight but still made rattling sound...airborn was poor choice of words..

and the air cleaner clips of on tight the three nuts at the bottom ...dont know although the unit seemed to be tight except for the tremendous push on the lid of the air filter ....

sorry wasnt clear still may not...has no clue about diesels

What's the status of the rack dampening bolt?

Ever change it to the new style.......with the gold pin?

Change in idle quality can be related to temperature and the tension on the damper pin will also vary with temperature.

You can adjust that pin and see if it affects the idle. Adjust it too far inward and you'll have trouble starting it.

The pin is on the back of the IP and it's secured with a locknut.

Also, what's the condition of the engine mounts? Old mounts are not the cause of the problem but will make a small problem much worse.

Also, realize that a plugged injector will also create a miserable idle. None of the aforementioned fixes will cure this. You must find the bad injector and get the nozzle replaced.

To diagnose, crack each injector nut.......one at at time........and note the change in idle quality. Each one should drop the rpms the same amount and the engine shake should get worse. If you find one where this is not the case, that injector is suspect.

LOL.......you're going to have some problems when you go to the mechanic.........the IP is the injection pump.......the heart of a diesel engine........it provides the very high pressure (about 2000 psi) necessary to atomize the fuel so that it will burn.

You can find the IP on the driver's side of the block.......there are five steel tubes that come out of the top of it........and go to the injectors.........you can't miss it.

The rack dampening bolt is on the rear side of the IP........near the top.

My advice is to find a mechanic that is familiar with this engine. Otherwise, you'll spend a lot of cash on the wrong items and the problem will not get resolved. These issues are difficult for a seasoned mechanic........they are impossible for a fellow with Chevy experience.
