I need a wagon evaluation - auction ending in 1.5 days

When I sold my wagon, I met a nice guy who ended up becoming second place on my auction. Anyway, he's still searching for another wagon, and I want to help him out.

Auction is ending soon, so can you critique this one quickly, please?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&item=130013430830&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I want as many opinions as possible.

left guages look like a replace from a later model. should have chrome caps where there are black ones. Carpet looks a bit faded for having been garaged.

Maybe tachs came in 82.

What's with the cheapo steering wheel cover?

What's with the extra long stereo?

All that extra chrome (door edges, fender rims) is an eyesore.

Something's not right in the dash between the clock knob and the odometer reset knob.

Looks good and worth $6500 if provenance is there. Personally I'd go for a 90-93 300D 2.5 or a 95 E300 for that much money.

Sixto
... stay tuned

You're right on that point. The thing is...that left gauge in the stand back picture is orange while the other 2 have faded to yellow (which I think is the point you are making). My 85 300D had just a little over 100K when I bought it and all the gauges are still nice-and-orange. I don't believe this wagon was always garaged and until a Carfax is run, I would suspect the 105K. We all know just how reliable MB odometers are. How likely is 4200 miles per year? And about that rust statement. I live in SC and southern cars are not immune from rust. It just affects ours a little later. Salt speeds up the process, but water causes rust. Would love to see under the bottom lip of the doors of this car. Pretty car but not enough photos to carry to the bank. Ask for a walk away option if not satisified. "Non-refundable" deposit demands always bother me. Best of luck.

Mine has 210K on it and palomino interior carpet shows turning to pink in many places (can see difference in spots behind spare tire and first aid kit). Looks like that ride has seen

As for the rust, indeed southern cars may get it too, especially near saltwater or brackish areas. Mine spent most if not all of its life in Virginia and is very rust free except for some surface rust spots where there is no paint left. Saw another VA car that had fully rusted through in a few spots. So no hard and fast rule I guess.

I ran the Carfax and it showed two entries. The first from 11/22/02 in Georgia - no mileage given. The second from 07/19/06 in North Carolina - no mileage given. Mileage real? No way to tell except by records.

That friend of mine called the Seller and asked about records and received "don't know anything about that" kind of answer. Mileage real? Still don't know.

You guys are good at seeing things I miss.

Thanks!

I'm the friend on whose behalf POS started this thread. Many thanks to him and to andmoon, winmutt, redassag00, jtshadows, sixto and slcom1983! I've been a classic Land Rover guy for years, so I appreciate the education as I start down the classic MB path. Best Regards.

Mark

What price for a TD

The 1981 TD turbo diesel did not have a tach, also the speedometer ended at 85 mph. I think it looks OK, as for the suspension who knows how it has been level adjusted.
You know when it sits jacked up in rear the accumulators are shot, which doesn't appear to be the case here.
For what its worth I wouldn't sell my 81TD for 6K, and there are just so many left in decent condition.

Reguards

Condition is everything

Being the proud owner of two 1985 W123 wagons, and keeping a constant eye on what is out in the market, I believe that the condition of the vehicle is everything. The wording in the listing says the seller is not responsible for the statements in the listing. I guess that means he can say anything and doesn't have to stand by it.

Your best bet is to have a trusted Mercedes mechanic check it out. If you don't do your own work you could be in for a big surprise when the climate control breaks the tranny goes out. I bought one of my cars from eBay and the seller lied like a rug even after I asked him direct questions.

Dont' believe a word he says and check the car out. He is trying to get top dollar and has no service records and won't stand by his description.

I think riethoven's statements put it all into perspective. The price is up to over $11K now.

Anything with no service records and someone who will not stand by his words should be walked away from.

There are far less risky 300TD's that have been or will be on the market for less and all they will need is a paint job to look as good as that one.

If that one is going for that much, I reckon I could just paint mine for $3K and flip it for $12K..a tidy 100% profit.
