Tach ? for my 82 300sd

When I got the car the tach wasn't working, But when I start the car up the tach bounces up a few times. It also seems to flicker when the directional is on. I pulled the sensor from under the hood and cleaned the contacts but there was no change. Are there other places to explore to get the tach working?
Thanks for your help

Do a search and you'll find a concensus that they never work right and not worth fixing. The design was so bad that it was completely changed in later years.

I hope this is not true, I bought a parts car, and plan on cleaning out all the contacts and such on my 82SD, if this will all be in vain, I may just push the car off a cliff!

For those of you that aren't keen on picking up butts off the street, I fixed my tach yesterday. The repair sequence:

1) remove electronic module from the 'can'
2) insert into the can two cardboard discs the size of a half dollar cut from a cardboard box
3) next insert a 3/4 inch thick foam rubber pad cut from some packing material
4) insert electronics module into the 'can'
5) rescrew into mounting socket

That works about 10 % of the time.

Bob,
You're one of the lucky ones.

A tach is that important to you? Where do you live? The only need I've ever found in a diesel with auto is in the mountains and particularly around Carson Pass which is 10,000 ft. You're ears are so screwed up you need a tach to know when to shift.
