Evaporator Coil Replacement on 97 E-class
 

Would anyone be interested in getting a bunch of pictures on the dash removal and replacement of an evaporator coil on a 97 e300D? It should be the same as any other e-class to my knowledge. I searched far and wide before doing this job and didn't find anything for the e-class, a few good ones for older models though.

I have good high-res pictures of putting things back together, just reverse to figure out how to take it apart. No rattles in the dash and cold cold air ever since I did the work two months ago, and that’s even during one of the hottest summers we've had in a while.

I'd definitely recommend this project as a diy.

If anyone's interested email me. I’d be happy to put some explanation to the pictures and give any other details. This is my first post and I probably won't get back to checking it for a while.

Do you have a place where I can post everything? I probably need to downsize the pictures as they're pretty big. I'm new to working on Mercedes, but I found this job particularly easy, just timely.

I have the pictures posted at the following address. They are in order of putting everything back together. Most pictures are around 2.5 Mb.

Is there a documented DIY that goes with the pictures?
I can resize the pictures but we would need documentation to describe the overall process.

I had a moment of inspiration and a moment of time and decided to get writing. I'm almost done, but will leave the rest for tomorrow or this weekend. No picture numbers have been included yet, but I've got the order of operation down.

I did this job several months ago, so the whole thing is from memory, but I think I got it pretty close. Anyway, it should be a slam-dunk for anyone with some mechanical ability who can fill in the dots with pictures and my article.

I've posted this to a word doc called Instructions.doc in the directory below. I'll just save over this document when I work on it again.

I didn't have a chance to work on it over the weekend, but here's a direct link to the document below. The last few steps and picture references still need to be put in. I wasn't sure if you wanted this for your own use or just to put out there for others. I hope to get it finished soon.

:laugh2: Here's a link to the revised evaporator replacement document. The next link is to all the pictures zipped. I put in markers where certain pictures should go. I'd be happy to give any pointers to anyone who decideds to tackle this job. Just e-mail me at nnourie@yahoo.com. I usually only get on this great forum when something goes wrong with my e300, which hopefully won't be a while, knock on wood.

Well, not the easiest DIY item, but doable.

I think my wife has a whole new respect for my mechanical ability, although there wasn't anything mechanical about it. Just unplug, replug, unbolt and rebolt. It looks alot scarrier than it was. I was very careful not to undo anything more than I needed, although I will say the order I did things in wasn't the most efficient, although the order of operations I wrote in the DIY article is more logical.

I lost track how long the job took but I managed to do it over the course of a week, mostly after work.

excuse my ignorance, how do you know the evaporator needs replacement?
