This is a second hand question from my daughter with the '82 240D. She has a smell that is not mechanical or oil. Her mechanic says it's a bad tank of fuel. I know stuff can grow in the fuel and there is treatment for it. Is this possible? Bad fuel smell inside the car while driving it? Any help appreciated.

Many of the 1982 240D's had plastic fuel tanks & they will STINK!! Most of them were replaced under warranty as MB had tech info bulletin on that subject.
