Unique circumstances aside, most in the US would agree that it's cheaper to sell your 190E and buy a 190D. That would explain why it's not a popular conversion.

You should also look into what it would take to get your vehicle through emissions after your conversion. The DMV might still regard your vehicle as a gasser and require you to pass emissions which you will have a hard time doing with a deisel. It might be an even bigger headache demonstrating that you have made the change. Just another thing to consider before making your decision.

Checking with the DMV is absolutely essential before you turn the first bolt. You could easily end up with something that you can't register for street use.

This will vary by state. I know that in IL, the car must be 25 years old to do this sort of thing. You would get a builders title here after making the swap.

Yes, the automatic will bolt right up and work. I have done this on one of my 201 chassis cars, except in reverse. I put an 190E 2.3 tranny into a 1987 190D 2.5 (same bellhousing pattern and tailshaft as a 2.2) with no problems. I seem to remember the only difference was the trans. vacuum modulator.

Good luck!

Klaus
