looking at a 190d need trans advise

im looking at 2 cars a 87 sdl 220,000 miles smokes like hell even when cranking (looks like a bad injector pump smells like diesel is being dumped i the motor) or could be a bad head hehe

and the second car a 190d looks nice expect its the goldish color with the red interior but its only got 170,000 he says it runs and shifts fine intill it comes to shift out of 3rd. i know (from this site) that they are known for 1-2 and 2-3 problems but what about 3-4 ?????????

any advies ???

thanks all

Cant wait to get a mb

white smoke == water == blown heads? Heavy smell of diesel due to unburnt diesel?

If the 190 won't shift into 4th at all I would think that's a fairly major problem!
