1985 300D turbo newbie questions
Hello All,
I just got a 1985 300D turbo. It has 205,000 miles. From what I can tell it runs ok. I have driven it about 50 miles so far. Just from reading the post here and the pictorials at dieselgiant I am moving in the right direction to bringing it up to speed. I have some questions. I have attached some pics so you can see what I see. The 1st pic looks like something was bypassed. What was there? The 2nd is a 3-way vacuum connector with one side open. (I tried to draw an arrow to it). Does something go there? The 3rd is Diesel Primer pump has fluid in it. Does it need to be repalced? The 4th are 3 unconnected hoses. I don't know if they are pressure lines or vacuum lines. (it's blurry...I circled the hoses). Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help. I have not driven the car since I found out I need new motor mounts. The parts are on order from dieselgiant. So while the car it sitting, I will work on the ALDA boost switch valve and vacuum, etc. Thanks , bsdguy

1: Likely, it was for the overboost valve. 2: Can't really see what it is. 3: There is an updated design that can be bought to replace your leaky one. $18 on eBay. 4. The two lines on the left goto the overboost valve. You can see it to the upper left of the brake booster. The yellow one on the right goes to the vacuum powered door locks (They belong connected to the yellow item in the first picture that has two bolts in it). The vacuum door locks probably leak and were disabled. You will need to pressure test the overboost valve to see if it leaks. I notice your brake booster has paint peeling off it. Make sure you are not leaking brake fluid. (The brake fluid also looks pretty black, it would be a good idea to change it while your working on the car.) It looks like the car ahas seen a few roadsalt winters but it still looks pretty good so far, let's see more of the car. Last edited by ForcedInduction; 08-16-2006 at 02:57 AM. |

Thanks ForcedInduction,
So the overboost valve is the same as ALDA Boost Switchover Valve? I will check to see if that yellow line will reach to the vacuum door lock. The lock might start working. I will add the brake fluid to my list. I think the car was parked outside. It's a California car. The paint is worn. I'm looking forward to working on this car. I wish I would have gotten in to diesel along time ago. Thank You, bsdguy

1st pic indicates your yellow door lock check valve has been blocked off. Might want to investigate that. The bright yellow lines going through the firewall are supposed to connect where the bolts are. Also, your overboost valve lines have been removed or cut.
2nd pic indicates that a 4 way connector is hooked to both ports coming out of the main vac line ( brake booster line - big whitish thing in the middle of the pic). This is incorrect. More than likely your empty 3 way should connect to one of the ports, and the 4 way is not connected properly to the switchover valve on the valve cover (a guess). 3rd pic - ditto Forced Induction. There is a good pictoral DIY in this forum somewhere for that Primer pump replacement. 4th pic Ditto F.I. search for some vacuum diagrams and schematics on here. You will get it all sorted out soon enough. Good luck, and you're in the right place. I found that out for myself quickly.

Hi Guys,
Here's an update. All was going well until I broke the line while putting the banjo bolt back in. So I have to get a new line. The one on my car was hard as a rock. The good news is I found out that the switchover valve was bypassed. I will look for a diagram so I can make sure I got it right. I think I can do this. Thanks, bsdguy
