Need quick help ...P/S fluid level
Went to change the fluid/filter in my 603 power steering, got it all done, and noticed a little problem. In the "E Class Owners Bible" instructions, it pictures a white spacer piece with a "fill level guide" on it (according to temps). Well, after I emptied the old fluid out of mine, I noticed my white spacer bar has NO fill level guides on it! There are just sort of triangular patterns down the side. Now I have an empty resevoir with no idea how much to put in there ... help?

Perhaps if you had an owner's manual, the fluid capacity section would have that number for you?

Here is a link to what the CD rom says. Hope it helps. --Matt NOTE: for future use the link says that at operating temp the fluid should be at the embossed or cast mark. At ambient temp it should be 6-8mm below cast mark. |

That said, new problem: manual says .6 Q ... I put in .5 quarts and it's already to the brim of the resevoir. I'm assuming maybe the .6 quarts includes some fluid that is not in the resevoir? I only emptied the resevoir ... ugh ... how do I manage to make everything so complicated? |
I can't seem to find an embossed or cast mark on mine ... it's just smooth all the way up to the top rim .... :(

Is it possible I have the pump listed under "VT 161, ZL 161, VTP 162"? That looks more like my pump ... and when I fill the fluid to that level, it looks like about the same level as it was before I emptied it. |
There is no mark on my pump either. Just fill it until its about 1/2 an inch off the rim.

Looks like mine is indeed that second type of pump ... well, that gives me an exact idea of how much to fill it ... my pump looks just like that. The E Class Owners Bible pictures the pump on the MY1991-up models ... no wonder I was confused. THANKS guys ... as always, I appreciate this place to bits. :D |

No close counts, worst case it overflows a bit and makes a bit of a mess. |
Put your .5 quarts in and start it up and run the wheel from left to right. All the way to the stops. Then check your level again and se if it will take the extra .1 quart.
