Problem with 307D 1980 - Need help urgently..
Hello..
I have a 307D 1980 that we use for long travles, its not fast but we got a lot of room in it.. And we really love it.. The thing is that the latest days its not behaving so funny. When it goes from one gear up to another when accelerating it starts to shake alot when changing between the gears. And i mean alot, today the fuelfilter droped loose because of the shaking. In the beginnig it was only between the second and the third gear but now it is between all gears. We cant figure out what the problem is, so im hoping that all the experience in this site will give me some help.. WR Magnus Ps. Sorry for my bad english, im swedish.. |

It is a medium sized Bus with an automatic transmission?
Assuming so, and being from the 80's, it's transmission probably makes use of vaccum and throttle position to determine shift points. Check to see if there are any vaccum leaks or if the Bowden cable has come loose somehow. Adjusting the transmission modulator (on the side of the trans) will increase/decrease fluid pressure and affect shift quality. Adjusting the bowden cable will change the RPM at which the trans shifts. Both can help trans that are beginning to develop terminal problems. Provide more info on the type of motor and transmission it has and I am sure others with more technical backgrounds with will provide you with more valuable advice. Your vibration could also be related to a bad motor mount.

That sounds like your problem. Any air in the fuel can make the engine run bad. A loose filter will let in alot of air.

The shaking is only when the tranny is changing between gears, it feels and sounds like the tranny cant deside what gear to put in.. TMAllison: Its a medium bus yeah, but no camper, 8 seats and 2 meters of storage, perfect for 8 mountainbikes.. |

Sounds like a transmission problem to me. I would suggest first trying to change the transmission fluid/filter and the see what happens. Don't forget the drain on the torque converter too. Try putting a can of tranny additive in there when you change the fluid too. We use something called TransX on this side of the pond.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll get much good advice from us. Only a few of us have ever owned MB vans and I believe the auto transmission in the van is different than the auto tranmissions in the cars. I think it's also the case that most 307d's were built with manual transmissions so experience is even more limited. There's a British MB site with a forum devoted to vans where you might find some help.
Does it make any difference if you manually shift it between gears?

Hi.
Now It's the driver writing.. The problem is some kind of resonance that firs occurred when shifting between 3'd and 4'th gear now it happens more sporadic on all gear. The resonance is BIG!!! like a earthquake.. it's a little better when shifting manually as I then can shift at higher rpm. also the resonance does not occur so often when accelerating with "kick down" but always when shifting at low momentum as in downslope. When I just cruise on highway there is no bigger problems. The frequency of the resonance is independent of speed but rpm affects it some. two ways of getting rid of the resonance when driving is to manually shift down, if that does not work it sometimes work to push it into kick down ( full throttle and down shift) so it seams to me as the tranny does not get enough pressure from the torque converter? Have anyone seen a gearbox like this one on a other model? Or does anyone know how to adjust it? I have non what so ever experiences whit automatic transmissions but have done many repairs on manuals and is very god in how mechanics works. Thanks for your inputs. Try changing the fluid and filter first to see if it makes any difference.

Nobody mentioned it yet, have you checked the flex disks or U-joints, whichever it has? I had a ford F350 that had similar symtoms, I thought the trans was bad. Because of the presures on the driveline at shift points, the whole driveline would "chatter" at shift points.
Just a thought

Drop that pan shown in your fouth pic and you will see the filter. It should be held in place by two phillips head screws. Try to clean everything up around the pan prior to removing it. Replace the pan gasket while you have it off too.
