What is nailing?
Hi Diesel Fans,
I have been reading the forums and see the term nailing come when Bosio nozzles were mentioned. What is it exactly? I will be doing the Bosio nozzle upgrade soon. Thanks, |
Nailing = engine makes a sound like hammering a big nail into concrete. The sound will make you feel the engine's pain.
Sixto ... stay tuned |
Nailing is loosely the diesel equivalent of engine knock on a gasser. Its the sound of a combustion issue in the nailing cyl, normaly a preignition. When the injector lets the fuel into the cyl too early or in the incorrect pattern you will have nailing. Some say it can be confused with normal diesel sounds but I feel that you will def know it when you hear it.

I thought this was a family show? It almost sounds like a very light rod knock when cold. I will do a video on what it sounds like when I get one in that has it. |
A question, having never heard exactly what nailing sounds like: Is it a very different sound from a sticking lifter? When I think of "nails," I think of the tickey-tappy sound that the lifter makes, but I would have to imagine the mechanical issue it involves would make a different sound. My car has one or two sticking lifters, apparantly ... when I first noticed the tapping, I was worried it might be the dreaded "nailing" ... took it to my indy and he said it was surely a lifter or two. Just curious how the actual sound of nailing compares to the tick sound.

From all of the verbal descriptions that have appeared on the forum, I have taken that the sound would be something like pounding a good sized nail into an Oak 2" x 4". Those who have heard nailing please suggest if it is really different.

Thanks Guys for all your input. You guys are the best. I will listen for nailing sound when I install those Bosio nozzles.

Correct me if I am wrong, but nailing to me sounds like metal on metal, not metal on wood.

To me, it sounds like someone is smacking the block with a ball peen hammer. Your mileage may vary....

I am wondering how replacing the nozzles would fix a problem that is due to the injection timing being off. I believe that's what you said, wasn't it, Endust? |
Nailing to me is like a sharp ring, my OM616 turbo does that off idle, it has mechanical injection with no ALDA so expected.
