240D Engine Mounts

I did a search but didn't find the answers to the following questions. When lifting the engine where should I place the jack? I'm assuming not on the oil pan as I don't want to crush it. Also do I need to loosen anything else beside the engine mount bolts to lift the engine? And what about the mount right behind the oil pan in the middle? It seems to be a mount that absorbs horizontal motion of the engine, but I don't see it listed in the parts catalog. Does anyone know what it's called?

Yep, I put a foot long piece of 2x4 under the oil pan. The thing behind the oil pan is called a torque mount or something like it. Yep, you need to unbolt it too. Mine was completely gone, a metal square with a metal tounge sticking in it, no rubber anywhere. Bought a new one on ebay, little diff design but works well. I did mine by driving the car up on ramps, letting it cool, then using the floor jack from straight ahead. Spray the three bolts on each mount with your favorite penetrant, and make sure you clean out the allen heads (I used a small screwdriver) because you need the allen bit to fit in tightly to keep from stripping them. Good Luck, Chuck.

That mount is called the "Front Engine Stop" in the FSM or at most parts places its called a "T-Strap Mount". The FSM shows the proper way to make a tool to install and adjust that mount.

Tom, does the piece of 2x4 distribute the load to a wide enough area to prevent crushing in the oil pan? I've never tried doing that before. How high must you lift the engine to replace the mounts?

You lift it only enough to gain clearance to remove the mounts. Usually about 1/2 to 1 inch.

My drivers side mount was flat, metal on metal, I prob lifted mine 2 inches to get enought room for the new mount and the heat/fuel shield.

Regarding your "horizontal motion" thingie!

Take a look at: http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/Drawings.aspx?bmid=144
which gives you great parts blowup diagrams for reference at such times as this... great to I.D. parts. Read the instructions in order to learn how to zoom in and out on the diagram!!
If your "thingie" is #186, then it is called an "Engine Shock" by this parts house. I think they are mainly used to try and control the engine vibration/noise at idle!

A 2x4 and a jack are fine on the oil pan. No worries about crushing the pan if you are only lifting it an inch.

Thanks for all the responses. Samuel, from the schematic the mount that I'm talking about is actually #187, and I'm especially talking about the part that surrounds this one with rubber, but I'm not seeing it. This weekend I plan to remove it to see if I can get a part number off of it.

Yesterday while looking at the side mounts from above I noticed some of the small allen bolts will be tough to access because they're under the protective metal shield. Are there any tricks that could help me with that?

Part #187 in the diagram you ID'd at:

is apparently something that PerformanceProducts4Benz does not carry, thus the text that explains what the #(s) are in their parts blow-up diagram does not offer any help.

Too bad... and I looked for something like this on my 1980 240D and could not see anything resembling #187 on the left [driver's] side of the engine down low... so I'm in the dark too.

Maybe some of the others who read this post can take a look at this diagram and tell your what #187 is!

Although these PefformanceProducts4Benz diagrams did not help this time, they are often very helpful in instances like this where the DIYer does not know the name for a part they have a question about. Maybe next time!

Upon close inspection today I realized that the #187 is exactly what I need and that's the part that comes with the rubber. It's called front motor mount. The metal bracket, as shown below, is a separate part and that one doesn't need replacing. I guess my side mounts (the main ones) are really shot. Notice how the bracket for the front mount is sitting too low.

Upon closer examination...

of the parts blow-up diagram and parts listing at:
http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/Drawings.aspx?bmid=144
I now find:
#187 is called a " Motor Mount - Front Mount" ... Price: $16.70, and
#188 is called a "Motor Mount - Side Mount" ... Price: $22.00

I'm glad we were able to clarify this for you... for I have been eyeing my rattling/shaky MBZ and motor mounts were a possible parts fix I am considering throwing at my 240D !

But right now I am considering retrofitting mine with:
#186 "Engine Shock".

Does anyone know about such retrofitting ?

DieselAddict... I was talking to my MBZ mechanic friend...

today about the motor mounts on the 240D and he says that when they become worn that you should replace them all... unless you have recently replaced one or more. He pointed out that there are:
(1) the two side motor mounts on the engine [both represented by #188],
(2) the front mount (in center) [ #187 ], and
(3) one rear/center mount that comes in 3 different styles [ #189 ] depending upon the transmission... also known as transmission mount.

So to answer one of your very first questions... your "middle" motor mount is #187 and it is called the "front" mount... at least by this parts house. And yes, I think you are correct, it only stops the engine from shifting forward... something that is needed to keep from quickly wearing out the 2 side and 1 rear mounts! I too want to understand these mounts better as well as the "engine shock"... all with the hopes of making my 4-banger a little smoother at idle!

Are you trying to solve idle vibration problems as so many of us 240D owners want to do?

What I am puzzeled by is why there are not two different P/Ns for #188... for on my 240D, the two side motor mounts that are most visible as such... these appear to be quite different.

240D Side Motor Mounts...

Well on a lark, I checked a different parts WebSite and found at:
http://www.mercedesnewparts.com/epcksoap.epc?action=Search&event=ResetProduct&cookieID=1U41AXVNS1VN1EEUC7
that the only "motor mounts" shown are the side ones and when you look there you will see that the same mount fits both sides... this I concluded when I say the listing shows that there are "2" of this part "Per Vehicle".

So that answers that and what I am seeing that is different is what must be the metal "bracket" that the actual motor mount bolts into. These brackets are definitely different on each side.

Good luck with this!
Sam
