Euro vs. American
I'm going to ask a stupid question, but am sure the answer is probably obvious...How does one tell a Euro car from the American version??? Is it by VIN number, appearance, or what??? Was just curious....I know there are differences in the bumpers, etc....

VIN is usually a WDB123(6), etc. Versus WDBCBxxxxxxxx
Skinny bumpers. Manual stuff on the inside. Euro lights. Hupcaps on many rides.

euro bumpers are smaller (thinner rubber)
euros have no EGR valve euros should come with a emergency triangle in the trunk thats all i can think of right now. |

No turbos on the diesels, and often had cloth seat covers instead of Tex or leather.

Horn beeps in German...
The VIN is the most reliable indicator. Other things can be replaced and lots of folks convert US cars to look like Euros. Sixto 93 300SD |

IP's are different for whatever reason.

Colors and location of VIN
Many of the 70's and 80's Euro cars had different colors for both the interior and the exterior than the US versions. There were greens, yellows and reds that were seldom seen here, and the creme interior color is also very rare hear. They also used velour on the Euro cars and very seldom here.
The VIN plate will be under the hood on the Euro cars and just inside the windshield on the US versions. If a car is gray market it will have it in both locations. The importer added the one to the windshield to meet DOT specs. There were also many engine options that were just not offered here. We always had the top of the line when it comes to Mercedes. That is one reason that some of these old Mercedes especially from the southwest are going back to Europe. They want the W123 turbodiesel which was not available in the coupe and sedan in Europe with all the options except ABS and airbags. And while we like the European look of the car, some Europeans like the large bumpers and US W123 headlights. I think the cars were designed with the Euro bumpers and look much better with them.

I still think ride height is one of the differences.
The IP difference on mine is no ALA. The shutoff valve is for a 190D makes me think they share same IP.

euro
My 240d Euro has a 616 916 engine. If the dealer is clueless on the parts for a car it is likely a euro. I've gotten the wrong parts twice so far from the dealer. the vin is the key. Mine has a stock tow hitch. It also has a metal tag with the importers name. It says it was manufactured in 1984, But the title says 1983.

A thread should be started on imported VIN plates. Mine are silly looking at best.

Lots of things can be changed over the years. Euro lights, and bumpers does not always indicate a euro car.
The vin is the best way. Manual climate control usualy is a good sign though.

What about the rear name badges?
Like the American would say "220 DIESEL" , and the Euro would say "220D"

A couple other small differences, 1) The fog lights can be used at the same time as the brights, (big deal), 2) No annoying buzzer when you leave the keys in the ignition, I like that and one other thing, I believe the blower motor is different.

When you drive
When you drive A EURO w123 it feels light on the road kind of like a cheap Datsun compared to a tank. The rear end has a teribale habbit of comming to see what the front is doing when cornering. A USA version feels solid and sure footed are EURO was timid cheap feeling maybe because the EURO was a 1985 and are US cars have been 1982 or older. But I am glad my son has sixto's SDL instead of that death trap EURO W123
