603 Oil Pressure Sending unit

My Gauge has tourettes, so I think I'm gonna clean/replace it. Anyone tell me where it is?

Thanks!

The sending unit is on the driver's side of the block, down low. Its pretty easy to find. It is round (looks like a large freeze plug) with an elongated (2" maybe) "cap" where the wire is attached.

How about you deliver them and I'll throw some steaks on the grill and we'll have a couple of cold ones and talk 603 and 617s!

That sounds like it can be arranged.

???

According to my memory and my EPC the oil pressure sender is located on the bottom of the oil filter housing, it's not mounted on the engine block.

Correct. It's at the bottom of the filter housing. You access it from underneath the car.

I accessed mine from the topside by removing the oil cooler lines was it worth all the effort? Yes, now I get the right readings, previously the pressure ran between high and higher, never dropping down when the oil was hot.

Well at least it's only the 5 or 6mm Allen to remove those oil cooler hoses. A NICE step up over the 617

Easy job

Just did my 87 300D today - thanks to all for the tips. As per above, my oil pressure sender/switch is mounted at the base of the oil filter housing, driver side. I didn't have to remove the oil cooler lines, here's my 30 min procedure:

1. Remove middle tube in oil filter housing to allow oil to drain into pan (might not be necessary but thought it may reduce the chance of an oil mess)
2. Siphon out WW fluid and remove bottle
3. Remove 2 10mm screws holding on the aux. water pump so you can move it out of the way (also not necessary but gives you a little more room for not much effort) - Don't remove hoses
4. Remove 2 10 mm bolts on the lower part of the cruise linkage (to move the cable out of the way that blocks your access to the oil pressure sender)
5. Unhook wire and clean the female end with a Q-tip packed tight between your fingers and then sprayed w/ contact cleaner (should enter the hole easily so you don't spread or leave cotton fibers)
6. Remove old sensor w/ 17mm open end wrench
7. Install new sensor, tighten w/ 17mm open end wrench, reinstall wire
8. Re-attach linkage, aux. water pump, WW fluid bottle
9. Test - turn key on but don't start (on mine, guage read 0 bar but did move a tiny bit vs. key off), start (should move up to 3 bar pretty quick if cold after filter housing is refilled)
10. When everything works, refill WW bottle and enjoy your new info and $100+ you saved!

If, by Tourette's, you mean...

'jumping' and not sitting steady (I'm really curious if your guage started yelling random profanity!?!?)

You might also check the O-rings on the tube in the center of the oil filter. If they are cracked, old, missing, etc. - guess what??

I had a bouncy guage and two $0.89 pieces fixed it.

Used Chris's method today on the wagon and was really surprised at how easy it was....hopefully this will cure a new leak as the old one was oily and toasted and the oil pressure gauge seems to be working to boot. Many Thanks to this forum.
