Two 603 questions

Since I'm more familiar with the 617 I'm still edumacating myself on "603 diesel 101."

1) what was boost pressure on the cars from the factory?
2) whats a good safe, but high level to set it at now without having a pyrometer?

Mine is 13.5psi @ full load. Seems like a good number. I think they're safe from 10-14psi. I haven't adjusted mine ever, it's the KKK turbo if it matters.

IIRC the wastegate opens between 0.85 and 0.95 bar and the overboost protection solenoid should close between 1.0 and 1.1 bar.

Sixto is correct. Spec is 0.85-0.95 bar. Most end up being 12.5psi of everything is working correctly. You will NOT get any more power by jacking up the boost beyond 12.5psi, so there's no need to worry about EGT's. More power comes from increasing fuel delivery on the IP. I've done this on my car (with a pyrometer) and yup, there's a definite power gain with the extra fuel... and I'm still at stock boost level. I've tested up to 18psi with zero power gain. More air with no fuel does nothing for power.

right on, i discovered that awhile back on my 617. Was playing with a mbc and boost shot up to 21psi, but no power increase. it had a severe lack of fuel issue but has since been rectified

I went from 8psi to 12psi on my SD and noticed it pulls down the freeway FAR better.

Well yes, if your current boost is below spec (like, 8psi) there can definitely be a power gain if you increase boost to spec (12psi) because the ALDA will add fuel to a certain point. The power gain wasn't from the air, but from the extra air + fuel. But, going beyond spec doesn't get you and power, because the ALDA is still limited by the internal full-load fuel delivery stop.

Tweaking the ALDA helps quite a bit, I made a big thread about it.
